93-year-old peace activist falsely accused of posting dirty videos on YouTube

As a gamer who has witnessed countless virtual worlds and battles, I find it disheartening to see a real-life hero like Metta Spencer, a 93-year-old former sociology professor, being wrongfully accused and silenced. Her channel, ToSavetheWorld, was more than just a platform; it was a beacon of global awareness, a place where crucial discussions on climate change, pandemics, hunger, and cyber risks took place.

93-year-old Metta Spencer, once a sociology professor at the University of Toronto, never anticipated being accused of sharing spicy videos at her age. However, this is what transpired when her YouTube channel ToSavetheWorld was unexpectedly terminated. The rationale? Supposed infringements of community guidelines; however, she later clarified to CBC that a hacker was actually responsible for the incident.

From peace research to adult film scandal

Spencer vocalized her annoyance, stating that her channel had been unexpectedly deactivated, resulting in the loss of numerous discussions she’d carefully cultivated throughout the years.

Her channel focused on fostering global understanding, hosting dialogues with prominent individuals about subjects such as climate change, pandemics, famine, and surprisingly, cyber threats. Unfortunately, it was a disruption during a live climate change stream (a Zoom-bombing incident) that resulted in this unusual predicament.

During the ongoing talk, unexpectedly some hackers disrupted the meeting, displayed inappropriate content, and gained access to her computer. Remarkably composed, even at 93 years old, Spencer skillfully ousted the intruders from the session and resumed the discussion. Regrettably, the turmoil didn’t cease: shortly afterwards, the hacker deleted her channel containing more than 600 videos that she had uploaded.

Spencer shared that communicating with YouTube had proven to be challenging because emails remained unanswered, the FAQ section didn’t provide helpful solutions, and efforts to get in touch with someone were all in vain.

Help arrived – late, but at least it arrived

Only when CBC Toronto stepped in and reached out to Google’s parent company directly did Spencer’s channel get restored. A representative from Google Canada clarified that one video had breached their guidelines. Yet, following a second assessment, the channel was reactivated, and the problematic video was taken down.

For Spencer, this was a huge moment of relief. She remarked that it represented many years of her life and expressed that she was glad it was restored, though she acknowledged the experience was humiliating.

Metta Spencer’s platform hosts discussions led by influential personalities, including ex-Canadian Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy and UN Ambassador Bob Rae. The objective here is to stimulate thoughtful dialogues about critical global matters.

Regardless of the turmoil, Spencer manages to keep her humor, remarking that it’s almost amusing how someone her age could be accused of sharing adult content. She acknowledged the irony, yet also highlighted the terrifying aspect of feeling helpless in such circumstances. Here’s hoping she can carry on with her favorite pursuit for a few more years: making a positive impact on the world.
