As a devoted Outlander fan, I must say that season 7, episode 10 was quite a rollercoaster ride for Claire’s character. The acting was top-notch, with Caitriona Balfe delivering an emotionally charged performance as Claire grappled with Jamie’s disappearance.
In the tenth episode of Outlander’s seventh season, Claire didn’t have a fantastic experience with the news she got. Yet, prior to this point, there were some significant scenes for her.
From an acting perspective, the ending of Outlander season 7, episode 10 was exceptional. Caitriona Balfe delivered powerful performances as she discovered Jamie Fraser as missing and presumed dead at sea. Despite her unwillingness to accept the truth, eventually, she had no other option.
All in all, the series effectively managed this situation. However, if the promotional content hadn’t given away that Jamie would return, the experience could have been more engaging. Nevertheless, the quality of the script and direction in this particular episode was commendable, fitting well within the narrative.
In this particular entry, I’ll be skipping over the part where Claire discovers about Jamie and the events following, as there are more significant Claire-centric developments in this episode that demonstrate her remarkable character growth. These moments prove to be pivotal for Caitriona Balfe’s performance.
Having Denny work with her on Henry Grey
Upon reaching Chestnut Street, Lord John Grey filled Claire in on all the recent developments. She found out that Denny Hunter was in town, and had performed an operation to remove a musket ball from Henry’s stomach. Next, Claire went to visit Denny for further medical attention.
In another phrasing: Denny expressed his disappointment in obtaining a second ball. When Claire mentioned her plans for surgery, he was taken aback, yet not repulsed or skeptical. Instead, curiosity about Henry’s potential shock emerged. What’s endearing about Denny is that he eagerly seeks knowledge from Claire, and she graciously offers to educate him.
I’m really excited to witness more collaborations between Claire and Denny. They complement each other wonderfully, and I was captivated by the way Claire broke down complex medical concepts for Denny in a manner suitable for a fellow surgeon. She neither patronized nor belittled him; instead, she educated him, which speaks volumes about her respect for Denny as a doctor and potentially as a protégé.
Telling Mercy about Walter Woodcock
When Claire discovered that Mercy Woodcock owned Chestnut Street, it struck her as if this might be Walter’s spouse. She refrained from digging deeper, but when Mercy mentioned that her husband was missing somewhere, Claire felt compelled to disclose the information she had.
Denny didn’t have the chance to tell Mercy the whole story. However, Claire managed to help Mercy find some resolution by sharing more details. After their argument, Mercy and Walter split up, an event that continued to bother Mercy afterwards. Claire was understanding and empathetic, avoiding any criticism towards Mercy, knowing well the complexities of marriage. Not everyone gets a chance for a peaceful goodbye.
It was advantageous that she was acquainted with Walter, as she was present when he passed away. This enabled her to understand his final thoughts. I’m glad the series addressed this discrepancy from the books, allowing Claire to convey those closing remarks.
Becoming a spy for the Rebels
In a critical moment, it was heartening to witness Mercy seeking help from Claire, who shared her rebellious spirit. Recognizing their mutual allegiance, Mercy felt confident in confiding some crucial details to Claire. As a covert operative, Mercy found herself on the brink of exposure. Aware of the perils involved, Claire still understood the significance of this task. Victory for George Washington was at stake.
I don’t usually find myself supporting Claire taking such risks, but given her history of espionage, this isn’t an entirely unfamiliar scenario for her. Typically, Jamie has been by her side in these situations, but he’s currently absent and unable to assist.
Claire wasn’t very persuasive when trying to pass through the barrier. It seems she should have prepared a well-thought-out plan beforehand. Nonetheless, she decided to take the chance and came very close to pulling it off. If not for Captain Richardson, who we suspect has ulterior motives, I believe she would have managed to escape undetected!
