Yuga Labs Acquires Tokenproof’s Tech Team to Enhance Web3 Innovation

Yuga Labs, the mastermind behind the popular Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT series, is bolstering its Web3 capabilities by acquiring the technology team from Tokenproof, an innovative tokenization platform founded by Fonz Olvera, also known as Fonz O. Tokenproof has been crucial in assisting users to securely authenticate their ownership of cryptocurrencies and NFTs since early 2022.

On December 3rd, Fonz O revealed that the acquisition would result in significant members from Tokenproof’s technology department joining Yuga Labs. He explained that their specialized knowledge would bolster Yuga Labs’ groundbreaking projects, helping the company to maintain its leading role in shaping the future of NFTs and blockchain applications.

New Team to Join Yuga Labs’ R&D Unit

Starting from August 2024, the recently combined team is set to be part of Yuga Labs’ Research & Development department, known as “The Workshop.” This department was formed after a company-wide reorganization in April, which resulted in staffing adjustments.

Adding the expertise of Tokenproof’s team is anticipated to speed up Yuga Labs’ progress in Non-Fungible Token (NFT) technologies and their associated environments.

Although Fonz O won’t be a member of Yuga Labs’ team, he plans to continue being engaged within the cryptocurrency and NFT world, while transitioning away from his “Tokenproof guy” persona.

This collaboration extends from a lasting alliance between Yuga Labs and Tokenproof, established in 2022. Together, they’ve been working on numerous projects centered around Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), such as backing ApeFest – an annual gathering for the Bored Ape Yacht Club community members.

It turns out that Fonz O disclosed that the concept behind Tokenproof emerged during ApeFest 2021, as it became clear at that time that there was a strong demand for robust NFT validation solutions.

According to Fonz O, Tokenproof originated from ApeFest 2021 during NFTNYC. During these events, it was necessary to verify NFT ownership, yet there was a lack of practical infrastructure for real-world applications. This gap in technology led to the creation of Tokenproof as a solution.

Driving Accessibility in NFTs

With the purchase of X (previously known as Twitter), Greg Solano, co-founder and CEO of Yuga Labs, stated that this transaction paves the way for Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) to become more reachable to a worldwide community.

According to Solano, our collective efforts with Tokenproof have helped us overcome numerous hurdles. This partnership has paved the way for groundbreaking advancements in both cryptocurrency and Non-Fungible Token (NFT) industries.

The responses from the community towards the acquisition have been predominantly favorable, as both developers and fans appreciate Tokenproof’s contribution in giving NFTs practical value in the real world.

When asked about the financial details of the acquisition, Fonz O humorously described its value as being “somewhere between a subway footlong and Elon Musk’s net worth.”

Simultaneously, the purchase occurs during an upswing in NFT sales, reaching a peak of $562 million in November, signifying a half-year high. This surge indicates a revived interest in digital collectibles after a downturn in the market earlier this year.
