As a gamer with a lifelong love for Disney animated films and a soft spot for Moana, I must say that the sequel has not disappointed! The introduction of Nalo as a new villain, albeit late in the game, adds an exciting twist to the storyline. The creative choice to portray Nalo as a force of nature rather than a human character early on makes sense, given the Pacific’s rich history and the integral role that gods play in their culture.
Disney’s much-awaited sequel to “Moana”, titled simply as “Moana 2“, is now out, leaving audiences intrigued with its captivating mid-credits scene. The story continues with Auliʻi Cravalho’s character Moana and Dwayne Johnson’s Maui embarking on another adventure to protect the tribes. Newcomer to the series, the cunning storm god named “Nalo”, serves as the villain in this sequel. Although Nalo significantly impacts Moana’s journey, he is not seen until the film’s end. In a recent interview, co-director Dana Ledoux Miller shared insights about the alteration in the post-credits, which ultimately brought Nalo to the big screen.
Dana Ledoux Miller on why Nalo didn’t appear in human form until mid-credits
Instead of incorporating Nalo directly into the story, the creator-screenwriter explained that the team behind Moana 2 intentionally chose not to forcefully include this divine figure. This decision was made to portray a more authentic and grounded danger within the movie.
When speaking with Deadline, Dana Ledoux Miller discussed Nalo’s involvement in the project, stating that the team hadn’t initially considered introducing him into the narrative earlier. She elaborated on the depiction of the storm god as a key element in the movie, saying, “The power of nature, particularly in the Pacific region, is immense, and the tales of the cultures spanning the Pacific are deeply intertwined with it.” Miller further added, “Deities are often associated with nature in some capacity.
Afterward, Miller elaborated on the reasoning for introducing Nalo’s character in its true form as a mid-credit scene in Moana 2. “We found it intriguing to create a challenge that was deeply rooted,” she mentioned.
After directors Miller and David Derrick Jr., who worked on Moana 2, shared that the frequently debated post or mid-credit sequence experienced numerous adjustments, Miller explained in an interview with Collider, “It underwent changes similar to how the rest of the story did. The core idea was introducing a demigod and a god into the world.” She further mentioned, “We found it intriguing to have a bit more added to it.
Ever since I got my hands on the sequel, I’ve been blown away by all the fantastic reviews it’s received! It truly lived up to the hype when it brought in an astounding $221 million during its debut at the domestic box office over the Thanksgiving weekend.
