As a mental health professional with years of experience under my belt, I find the portrayal of complex characters and their struggles in “Brilliant Minds” to be both engaging and educational. The character development is particularly impressive when it comes to Pierce’s experience with gaslighting by Morris.
In the tenth episode of “Brilliant Minds” season 1, we find Wolf and his team springing into action when a first responder experiences an accident inside the hospital. This tale carries significant weight as it delves into the complexities of chronic pain management and available treatments.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Brilliant Minds season 1, episode 10.
One strength that stands out in Brilliant Minds is its focus on character-centric narratives. This goes beyond mere medical diagnoses. To Dr. Wolf, each patient represents a person, and he approaches their care by delving deeper than just symptoms to find effective treatments. His trainees are absorbing these skills effectively, simultaneously learning how to compassionately aid patients.
Wolf understands chronic pain in Brilliant Minds
Though Wolf himself doesn’t grapple with a bodily affliction, he empathizes deeply with chronic discomfort, having experienced emotional pain persistently over the years. It’s essential to clarify that emotional and physical pain are not identical experiences; I’ve endured both, and I can attest that unexplained physical pain is overwhelming and can potentially push one to the brink of insanity.
Instead of just focusing on addressing the immediate issue or symptom, Katie, who’s a first responder and unfortunately contracted meningitis and listeria, revealed her personal experience with persistent pain. The wound from a shoulder injury she sustained during a call eventually healed, but the pain persisted. It might be due to insufficient time off taken, or it could be because of some nerve damage that caused the discomfort.
Katie has been focusing on managing her symptoms only, using steroids as a means to cope with the discomfort but this has weakened her immune system significantly. If she’s not cautious, an ordinary infection could potentially be fatal for her. Unfortunately, she hasn’t had much support from others, making it hard for her to discuss her health concerns and the associated pain.
As a gamer, I’d say: “Wolf stepped up when I needed it most, offering the support that truly mattered. Dana and Jacob were there too, lending a hand whenever they could. We’re growing into quite the tight-knit gaming crew, always eager to welcome new members. Wolf didn’t just see Katie’s pain, he took the time to understand what was really going on beneath the surface.
I’m excited to spend more time with Katie, it seems likely that we will. There appears to be a connection between Katie and Dana, and the fact that Dana has begun to open up slightly to Katie suggests that she values someone like Katie in her life. Jacob is adorable for noticing the mutual interest between Dana and Katie.
Regarding Jacob, by the finale, my heart truly empathized with him. Just when he gathers the strength to talk to Ericka and express some of his emotions, he discovers that she’s involved with another man – Van. This revelation seems poised to create a significant ripple effect between Jacob and Van for quite some time, especially since Jacob is aware of Van’s secret about his son.
Van and Ericka help a patient who can’t feel pain
Isn’t it fascinating how two contrasting situations were connected in this week’s Brilliant Minds? We have one patient struggling due to constant pain and another who feels no sensation at all. In a sense, they both yearn for each other’s circumstances. The father of the pain-insensitive boy might dream for his son to exchange lives with Katie.
A small number of individuals possess the unique trait of being unable to perceive pain, a topic that has been touched upon in several TV shows. For instance, Grey’s Anatomy featured Abigail Breslin’s character asking Alex Karev to hit her since she couldn’t sense any pain. Criminal Minds also explored this idea with a pain-insensitive serial killer. All these series delve into the significance of being able to feel pain, and I can’t help but recall Snowpiercer’s final season, where Boki emphasized to Josie the importance of experiencing pain as a means of recognizing when something is amiss.
Instead of solely focusing on helping the father comprehend his condition, Van and Ericka aim to devise a means to aid both the father and his son. They remain optimistic, understanding that persistent treatment will be necessary, yet they see a glimmer of hope in the situation.
I find it intriguing how perceptive Ericka seems. She noticed that Van remained unfazed during his treatment of the boy, which is unusual since he typically senses physical pain himself. Since the boy was incapable of feeling it, there was nothing for Van’s mirror-touch synesthesia to pick up on. This suggests that the boy wasn’t feigning anything and also highlights some constraints to Van’s unique ability.
Currently, I’m bracing myself for the potential fallout when Ericka discovers that Van has a son. I understand that raising children can be challenging, and it wasn’t expected that Van and Ericka would be in a serious relationship. Initially, their connection was casual, so there was no obligation for Van to reveal he had a child. However, as their bond deepens, honesty becomes increasingly important. Eventually, he’ll need to come clean about his family situation, because if he doesn’t, it might be Jacob who does.
Pierce shows us what happens with gaslighting in Brilliant Minds
Due to Morris’s prolonged deceit and manipulation towards Pierce, it took her quite some time initially to make sense of things. Additionally, she found it difficult to detach herself from Alison and her treatment plan because she yearned for answers. However, given the danger she’s in, it’s crucial for her to leave. Now that Morris has confessed the truth about what she knows, Pierce can choose to move on. While complete closure may not be achieved, knowing one was right in such a situation can aid in dealing with the anger stemming from gaslighting.
Despite being in a precarious situation, Alison shows no regret for her actions against Pierce. It’s unlikely that Pierce could have provided evidence to prove that Alison was responsible for damaging her car. In fact, many would probably deny such an act. Surprisingly, Alison openly boasted about what she did to Pierce, and it wasn’t done discreetly.
Things are likely to deteriorate significantly before they improve, given Alison’s discovery of Pierce’s unethical actions that could lead to license revocation. If necessary, Alison will use this against Pierce. However, Pierce should try to prevent her from taking any further action, as Alison is unpredictable and her daughter might be at risk if things escalate.
I’m concerned that Brilliant Minds might be using Alison as a means for Morris and Pierce to reconcile, which could potentially indicate disregard for others. Those who engage in affairs often fail to consider the feelings of those around them. They tend to isolate their emotions and secrets, not just from the person they’re being unfaithful to, but also from family and friends. This behavior causes harm not only to their romantic partner but also to their entire support network, all for personal gain. Regrettably, it’s common for them to shift blame onto their spouse for their emotional response, rather than acknowledging their own actions as the source of the problem.
If Morris is admitting fault for the affair, it’s likely not because he feels guilty about his actions. Instead, he’s attempting to progress if he truly wanted to move on, he would have confessed everything to Pierce honestly and stopped deceiving her. However, he has continued to mislead her and manipulate the truth, which suggests that deep within, Morris doesn’t genuinely want to be seen as a good person, because in reality, he isn’t.
In simpler terms, Pierce revealed the significant sacrifices she made for his career. Given everything that’s happened, it seems impossible for her to return to him now. She must move on, as choosing to do so would offer a better outcome than remaining in this situation. However, before she can move forward, she needs to distance herself from Alison. The production of Brilliant Minds aims to portray the truth about affairs and their common endings. It’s crucial to confront the reality that there may be no hope after an affair, and the hurt and manipulation can’t just be erased easily.
Brilliant Minds airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
