As a die-hard 49ers fan with years of heartache and triumph etched into my sports soul, I can’t help but feel a pang of worry as I read about Christian McCaffrey‘s latest injury update. The man has been a beacon of hope for our team this season, returning from an Achilles injury only to slip on a snow-covered field and suffer a PCL strain.
In the recent update regarding Christian McCaffrey’s health, his father has disclosed information about his Partial Collateral Ligament (PCL) injury. On a snow-covered field during a game against the Buffalo Bills on December 1st, McCaffrey sustained a non-contact injury to his knee after an awkward slip. Given that there are just five regular season games remaining in the 2024 NFL season for the San Francisco 49ers, concerns arise as to whether their star running back will recover quickly enough to contribute towards securing a playoff spot for the team. Here’s what we currently understand about McCaffrey’s PCL strain and the typical healing time for such injuries.
What is the status of Christian McCaffery’s PCL injury?
On Monday, I’m due for an MRI, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that my “PCL strain” isn’t too severe, as per what my dad, Ed McCaffrey, shared during an interview on The Up & Adams Show.
As a die-hard fan, I’m curious: What’s the latest on Christian McCaffrey’s injury? Ed McCaffrey shared that it seems to be a PCL strain. He’s scheduled for an MRI today, hoping for the best and not too much damage. #FTTB @CMC_22 @heykayadams @87ed @49ers

A “possible PCL strain” rather than a confirmed “PCL rupture” is considered positive news. It’s worth mentioning that the running back managed to leave the field unaided. Nevertheless, the medical team has not fully assessed the severity of the injury as yet.
How long does the usual PCL strain take to heal?
A common PCL injury might heal in as little as 10 days if it’s only minor, or up to 9 months for severe cases, based on Cleveland Clinic findings. The severity of a PCL injury is graded from I to IV, with I being a mild tear and minimal instability, while a Grade IV injury indicates a complete tear and significant instability in the knee joint.
Despite a seemingly minor issue with PCL strain, the 49ers might take into account McCaffrey’s previous injuries during this season. He just recently re-joined the team after dealing with Achilles tendinitis for several weeks, which forced him to sit out the first eight games of the season.
As a gamer putting myself in Christian McCaffrey’s shoes, if I were to sustain a PCL injury, it’d mean sitting out for at least one game (and possibly even two or more). Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned after the Bills game that he believes a typical PCL recovery takes around a couple of weeks, but he’s still uncertain about my specific situation.
