Lilo & Stitch Director ‘Grateful’ to Reprise Role in Live-Action Adaptation

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for animated movies and their remakes, I must admit that the upcoming Lilo & Stitch remake has me pretty pumped! The fact that Chris Sanders, the original voice of Stitch, is reprising his role is just icing on the cake. With his extensive experience in directing hits like How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods, I have no doubt he’ll breathe new life into this beloved character.

The upcoming remake of “Lilo & Stitch” is set to hit theaters next year and will include the voice talents of Chris Sanders, who not only voiced Stitch in the original but also co-directed the film with Dean DeBlois. As per Sanders, reprising his role was a significant and cherished experience for him.

In a recent chat with ComingSoon, director Sanders (known for movies like How to Train Your Dragon, The Croods, The Wild Robot, among others) shared his feelings about reprising the voice role of Stitch. For Sanders, receiving the call was a joy and he always enjoys voicing the character.

What did Chris Sanders say about playing Stitch?

Sanders expressed his delight, expressing gratitude for being contacted regarding that particular opportunity. He’s completed four sessions so far, and he anticipates there might be one more for him as they wrap up since they were still figuring out many aspects. In essence, he expects a final call from them. Overall, he found it fantastic, appreciating every moment, and he’s often in the studio at least six times a year to lend his voice to ice shows, parades, toys, and other projects.

In the movie, Maia Kealoha takes on the role of Lilo, while Sydney Agudong portrays Nani. Kaipo Dudoit is cast as David, Tia Carrere plays Mrs. Kekoa, Courtney B. Vance acts as Cobra Bubbles, and Amy Hill portrays Tūtū. Jason Scott Lee assumes the role of a manager at a luau. As for the voice actors, Sanders lends his voice to Stitch, Zach Galifianakis voices Dr. Jumba, and Billy Magnussen plays Agent Pleakley.

The synopsis describes a modern retelling of Disney’s 2002 animated film, ‘Lilo & Stitch’, as an entertaining and heartwarming tale about a young Hawaiian girl with few friends and an escaped extraterrestrial who helps heal her family’s rifts.

In the script for the film, Chris Kekaniokalani Bright was the one responsible for the writing, whereas the screenplay for the 2002 original movie was penned and directed by Sanders and DeBlois. Interestingly, Sanders lent his voice to the character in the initial movie as well as various subsequent projects such as Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch from 2005, and Leroy & Stitch in 2006.
