As a long-time fan of James Gunn’s work and a die-hard DC Universe enthusiast, this news about Alan Tudyk’s expanded role in the DCU has me positively gleaming with excitement! The idea of seeing Tudyk bring his unique charm to three different characters is simply electrifying.
It’s been verified by James Gunn that Alan Tudyk, who voices Creature Commandos, will portray a minimum of one active character within the DC Universe.
Starting next month, Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe launches its inaugural project with the animated Creature Commandos series. It was recently announced that Alan Tudyk will lend his voice to three distinct characters in this show: Doctor Phosphorus, Clayface, and Will Magnus.
In a recent conversation about Threads, Gunn was queried whether Tudyk would portray any of his Creature Commandos characters in live-action within future DC Universe productions.
Gunn answered, “Oh yes.”
What else did James Gunn say about Creature Commandos and the DCU?
Earlier on, it was mentioned that characters in the DCU could be portrayed by the same actors across both animated and live-action productions. For instance, Frank Grillo lends his voice to Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, but he’s also set to act as the character in both Superman (2025) and Peacemaker Season 2 when they air.
When questioned about Tudyk being assigned to play three distinct DCU characters on Threads, Gunn replied, “As previously mentioned, our intention is that the actor will portray the same role primarily for main castings.” If it’s a minor character in Creature Commandos, we didn’t conduct comprehensive live-action searches across various regions like we did for more prominent characters such as Circe or Nina.
Beginning on December 5, 2024, the opening installments of Creature Commandos will make their debut on Max. Fresh episodes will be released every week, concluding with the final episode on January 9, 2025.
The voice actors joining this series are Steve Agee (John Economos), Maria Bakalova (Princess Ilana Rostovic), Anya Chalotra (Circe), Zoë Chao (Nina Mazursky), Sean Gunn (G.I. Robot and Weasel, who is also set to play Maxwell Lord in the DCU, but his debut isn’t confirmed yet), David Harbour (Eric Frankenstein), Indira Varma (the Bride), and Viola Davis (Amanda Waller).
