Riot Games offers $100k bounty for LoL & Valorant hackers

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of hackers and cheaters ruining the fun for honest players. So when Riot Games announced their bounty program for ethical hackers to find flaws in Vanguard, their anti-cheat system, I was intrigued, to say the least!

Riot Games provides hackers with rewards of up to $100,000 if they discover methods to breach or expose vulnerabilities within Vanguard, their system. However, these hackers must abide by specific guidelines during the process.

In an effort to continually combat hackers and ensure fair matches, Riot Games has chosen to provide rewards of up to $100,000 for any hacker capable of discovering vulnerabilities in their Valorant and League of Legends protective measures, specifically the anti-cheat system known as Vanguard.

You against Vanguard

Vanguard operates at the core level within your computer – essentially, the most fundamental part – to detect cheats before they can spoil the game and has proven effective against aimbots and other suspicious hardware manipulations. While this may lead to a more secure gaming environment, some players are expressing concerns about their privacy being compromised in the process.

Riot has taken things a step further by introducing a reward system, encouraging skilled and ethical cybersecurity experts to demonstrate their abilities and exert maximum effort.

On HackerOne, a platform linking skilled hackers with companies for securities improvement, it’s clear that Riot is offering rewards to individuals who can successfully identify weak points or breaches in Riot’s defenses, essentially helping them strengthen their protective barriers.

Real life loot for hackers

Here is a list of the highest bounties Riot offers on HackerOne:

Network Attack with No User Interaction:

  • Kernel-Level Code Execution: Up to $100,000
  • Unauthorized Data Access: Up to $75,000

Network Attack Requiring User Interaction:

  • Kernel-Level Code Execution: Up to $75,000
  • Unauthorized Data Access: Up to $50,000

Local Attack for Privilege Escalation:

  • Kernel-Level Code Execution: Up to $35,000
  • Unauthorized Data Access: Up to $25,000

The bounty program represents Riot’s ongoing dedication to combating cheating. By implementing this, they aim to uncover potential vulnerabilities within Vanguard, their anti-cheat system, so that they can promptly address and fix these issues before they are exploited by harmful hackers, thereby preserving the integrity of their games and protecting players.

However, Riot Games won’t distribute money haphazardly. Instead, hackers must provide a robust proof of concept when discovering vulnerabilities within the kernel-level driver of Vanguard. They are also required to keep silent regarding any discovered exploits and not discuss them publicly at all.

What are you thinking about Riots new way to improve their anti-cheat-security? Do you think something like this could also work for other game developers?
