As a long-time Disney animation enthusiast who grew up with Moana and her captivating adventures, I must admit that my expectations for this sequel were sky-high. Having followed the development of Moana 2 closely over the years, I was eagerly awaiting the return of my beloved characters to the big screen.
The long-awaited reviews for Moana 2 have been released, and it’s left audiences and critics equally charmed. Yet, despite its success with viewers, the Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic ratings of Moana 2 haven’t quite outshone those of the original film. Featuring stars like Dwayne Johnson, Auliʻi Cravalho, Rose Matafeo, Hualalai Chung, and others, this sequel hit the silver screen in cinemas nationwide on November 27, 2024.
Moana 2 reviews are largely positive
After the premiere of Moana 2, reviews have been positive, commending it as an acceptable continuation from the original film that debuted in November 2016.
In a new tale, Moana (Cravalho) embarks on another sea voyage, this time accompanied by Maui (Johnson), to discover the enigmatic island of Motufetu. What’s more, critics are impressed by how the familiar characters maintain their original charm and elegance from the initial movie.
In his review, Coming Soon’s Jonathan Sim described Moana 2 as an “enjoyable journey,” stating that it maintains the safety of being a predictable sequel without compromising on quality. It may not take any daring risks, but it certainly doesn’t leave you feeling let down.
Kate Erbland from IndieWire praised Moana 2 for living up to the expectations of the original film, saying “It’s not easy to surpass the original, but ‘Moana 2’ adds a lively touch to this sailing legacy. It manages something remarkable in our sequel-heavy era: it made me eager for more journeys.
Moana 2’s Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores are lower than the original
In 2016, Moana received a commendable rating of 95% on the Tomatometer and an impressive 89% on the Popcorn Meter.
Based on Rotten Tomatoes, Moana 2 received a Tomatometer score of 70%, while it garnered an 89% on the Popcorn Meter. Notably, these scores are less than what the initial film achieved during its debut.
Conversely, on Metacritic, the sequel Moana garnered a score of 57 compared to the original’s impressive 81.
