Everyone is taken aback when ‘Jane the Brain,’ known for her academic prowess, fails her final college class and returns to her tranquil hometown by the Michigan lake. Her supportive parents, feisty older sister, familiar friends, and an old high school sweetheart ease the pain of failure as she ponders her next steps. Soon enough, this setback seems like a chance for one last, carefree summer getaway.

Leveraging her studies in linguistics, she shares her knowledge – particularly American Sign Language – to aid Amber in communicating with her son. However, despite her attempts, Jane finds it hard to conceal the root issue that disrupted her academics earlier. Struggling with feelings of inadequacy and battling the effects of PTSD, Jane’s inner turmoil eventually surfaces. With the help of those close to her, Jane embarks on a lifelong journey of healing following a sexual assault.
