As a die-hard Outlander fan who has followed the adventures of Claire and Jamie for years, I must say that season 7, episode 9 was a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The reunion at Lallybroch was heartwarming, but it was the moments that showcased Claire’s character that truly stood out.
In the 9th episode of season 7 in Outlander, Claire’s return to Lallybroch signified significant reconnections. Additionally, it provided an opportunity to rectify an old wrong as depicted in the novels.
Upon returning and learning about Michael being in Paris, Claire realized she had to confess her time-travel capabilities to the Murrays truthfully. This memorable scene, while not necessarily one of Claire’s finest moments in episode 9 of Outlander season 7, was certainly among its highlights. It’s worth noting that the show has corrected a discrepancy from the books with this plot development, which I appreciate.
Instead, let’s zero in on the significant instances involving Claire. There are three such events that clearly reveal her true character.
Accepting Jamie needs to see Laoghaire
In Outlander’s seventh season, episode 9, Jamie found himself with some lingering matters in Scotland that he had to address. He informed Claire of his intentions to visit Laoghaire before departing, demonstrating the significant progress they’ve made in their relationship. However, it wasn’t about seeking approval, but rather keeping her informed about his decisions, as he was aware this could potentially have consequences for him later on.
Claire recognizes the reason behind Jamie’s action, which is to see Laoghaire. She doesn’t challenge his decision because she is aware that Laoghaire currently has some leverage over them. Instead, she lightens the mood by making a humorous comment about it and shows her trust in him as he proceeds with his plan.
It does lead to a great line in the episode when Jamie has figured out a way to handle his Laoghaire problem. “Like it or not, I’m part of this family.” It’s so true!
Feeling guilty for knowing there is someone she can save
Claire receives a missive from Lord John Grey urging her to journey back to America for the sake of his nephew, Henry. Jenny listens as Claire peruses the letter and shares her thoughts with Jamie. She’s wracked with remorse, having recently acknowledged that she’s unable to alter Ian’s medical condition.
It’s clear that Claire would aid Ian if it were possible, and she’s not the type to stand by while another person dies due to self-serving reasons. In fact, there’s someone whom Claire could rescue.
It’s fascinating how much thought Claire puts into considering Jenny before helping Henry. She recognizes that she can aid Henry, and it’s clear to her that Henry would not survive without her presence. Yet, she yearns for Jenny’s approval before taking action.
Accepting Jenny’s apology at the end
Upon my departure back to America, an opportunity arises for me (Claire) to rectify a slight misunderstanding with my dear friend Jenny. In a heartfelt apology, Jenny acknowledges her overreaction when I explained my inability to aid Ian. She articulates that her actions were born out of anger and sorrow, but she now recognizes they were not appropriate.
Claire empathizes deeply with Jenny’s feelings, having experienced similar grief herself by losing both Jamie and Frank. In essence, her immediate response doesn’t necessarily equate to an acceptance of the apology, but rather a shared understanding and compassion.
It’s wonderful to witness the renewal of their sibling relationship. They part ways in peace, demonstrating their significant progress over time. I believe a younger Claire might have reacted harshly towards Jenny due to lack of comprehension about grief.
