Don Cheadle to Play a Murderous Jazz Musician in New Movie Canyon

As a long-time fan who has followed Don Cheadle‘s illustrious career, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement at his latest project, “Canyon.” From his Oscar-nominated role in Hotel Rwanda to his memorable turns as Rhodey in the MCU and Sean Charles in Unstoppable, Cheadle has consistently demonstrated his versatility and prowess as an actor.


Don Cheadle has been tapped to star in a new movie called Canyon.

As a gamer, I can proudly say that I’ve been recognized by the Academy for my exceptional portrayal in Hotel Rwanda back in 2004, earning me a Best Actor nomination. Beyond that, many fans recognize me as James “Rhodey” Rhodes, or War Machine, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the future, I’ll be gracing our screens once more as Sean Charles, a character in William Goldenberg’s Unstoppable. This exciting project will debut on Amazon Prime Video on January 16, 2025.

Currently, Cheadle has been chosen for the lead role in an upcoming action film titled “Canyon.” This project is being penned by Derek Kolstad, who is renowned for his work on “John Wick.

What do we know about the Canyon movie starring Don Cheadle?

As Deadline reports, the movie is set during a single sweltering night and tells the story of Canyon, a character who juggles part-time jazz music with full-time assassinations. In an unexpected turn of events, Canyon takes on the role of guardian for a young woman possessing a siren-like allure, who has been drawn into a violent conflict between rival crime clans.

The film is being helmed by Colin Tilley, a director renowned for his work on music videos featuring artists like Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber, among others.

Alongside Andrew Kosove, Cheadle, Kolstad, Jon Davis from Davis Entertainment, and Jeremy Stein are also acting as producers in this project.

Derek Kolstad has been instrumental in crafting the screenplays for the initial three John Wick films: “John Wick” (2014), “John Wick: Chapter 2” (2017), and “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” (2019). He also penned the scripts for the movie “Nobody,” released in 2021, featuring Bob Odenkirk, and the upcoming sequel, “Nobody 2,” set to premiere in theaters on August 15, 2025.

Furthermore, Kolstad has written the script for another film called “Normal”. This upcoming production will feature Bryan Cranston in the lead role, while it’s being directed by Ben Wheatley. In addition to Cranston, the cast includes Henry Winkler, Lena Headey, Ryan Allen, Billy MacLellan, Brendan Fletcher, Peter Sinkoda, and Jess McLeod.

A release date for Canyon has not yet been announced by Alcon Entertainment.
