As a gamer who has been following wrestling closely for the past decade, I can’t help but feel like I’m witnessing a real-life WWE storyline unfold right before my eyes. The return of CM Punk to WWE after his controversial departure from AEW and subsequent text exchange with Stone Cold Steve Austin feels like something straight out of a script. It’s as if the writers of wrestling have taken a page from my gaming life and brought it to reality.
Legendary WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin reached out to ex-AEW star CM Punk following Punk’s comeback to wrestling last year. After a seven-year absence, Punk reentered the ring in 2021, but his tenure with the promotion was marked by controversy. Despite contributing significantly to AEW’s ratings and financial growth, conflicts arose in 2022 when he publicly criticized AEW’s Executive Vice Presidents, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega. This verbal confrontation culminated in a backstage altercation between Punk and The Young Bucks and Omega, leading to suspensions for those involved.
Approximately a year after another brawl backstage, Punk found himself in a scuffle this time with up-and-coming star Jack Perry during All In. This incident ultimately resulted in Punk’s dismissal from AEW. Subsequently, WWE broadcasts hinted and sparked discussions about his possible comeback. Roughly ten years later, Punk officially returned to the WWE at Survivor Series: WarGames on November 25, 2023. Close to a year following this event, Punk disclosed a text conversation between him and WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin.
