As a seasoned Outlander fan, I’ve journeyed through time loops, love triangles, and epic battles, but nothing quite prepared me for Roger’s unexpected detour in season 7, episode 9. The moment he knocked on Lallybroch’s door and found young Jenny instead of the grizzled Jamie, my heart skipped a beat faster than Claire’s during a time-travel mishap!
In the ninth episode of Outlander’s seventh season, Roger and Buck successfully navigated through the stones. Recognizing they had traveled back in time, they discovered, however, that they were not exactly in the location they had anticipated.
Observing that Bree wasn’t present and no road was visible, Roger realized he was no longer in the year 1980. This discovery suggested they had arrived in the year 1778 instead. As a result, Buck went towards Inverness to check if Rob might have taken Jemmy there for passage on an American ship, while Roger made his way to Lallybroch to determine if Jemmy had somehow escaped and made it there.
It was at Lallybroch where Roger discovered he hadn’t stepped into 1778 as he thought; instead, Jamie was nowhere to be found upon his knock. In his place stood Brian Fraser.

Roger soon understands that he’s traveled too far back into the past, as evidenced by Brian Fraser being present at Lallybroch. This implies that Roger must have journeyed to a time preceding when Jamie was imprisoned at Fort William.
Upon Roger’s entry, a younger Jenny Fraser makes an appearance, who hasn’t tied the knot with Ian Murray at that point. Brian observes that Ian is someone Jenny seems interested in, and it’s evident that Brian favors this connection. He unequivocally conveys that Jenny isn’t someone for Roger to ogle.
As a doting father, I hastily remind him that I’m a married man. Easing up, Brian offers me solace and suggests I stay the night, assuring us we can continue our search for Jemmy come dawn. He also shares a bit about his life, mentioning that his son Jamie is studying abroad in France at the moment.
In this scenario, it’s crucial for Roger to determine the specific time frame as he is unsure if it’s 1739 or 1740. This information will help him identify which monarch is ruling at that moment and whether the Battle of Culloden has taken place yet—which, in this case, hasn’t occurred.
