Josh Brolin Recalls Almost Fighting Denzel Washington on Set of American Gangster

As a movie buff with a knack for behind-the-scenes drama, I find the story of Josh Brolin and Denzel Washington during the filming of American Gangster absolutely intriguing! It’s fascinating to see these two powerhouse actors clash on set, only to create such a powerful performance together.

In the 2007 crime movie titled “American Gangster,” both Josh Brolin and Denzel Washington appeared. However, as per Brolin’s account, there was a near altercation between them during filming.

What happened between Josh Brolin and Denzel Washington?

During his conversation on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast, as reported by Variety, Brolin shared that he had a moment where he believed he might engage in a scuffle with Washington following a disagreement they had on set.

According to Brolin, Denzel arrived a bit late on set and there was quite a scene unfolding. Later, Denzel shared the script with him, altering its structure without modifying Brolin’s lines specifically. He explained his adjustments by saying, “I believe I should place this section here and move that part there.” However, he seemed rather focused on the changes and didn’t give much attention to Brolin during their conversation.

He explained that he was attempting to recall the script’s structure and then we practiced. Essentially, it was mostly my lines. I needed to portray self-assurance. After all, it’s Denzel Washington we’re dealing with here. It’s challenging – you’re just an actor being tested to see if you’ve got what it takes. And unfortunately, I slipped up and forgot a line.

According to Brolin, he attempted to inquire about Washington’s position and did so by gently touching his shoulder. However, Washington reacted angrily, pushing Brolin’s hand aside and shouting at him. This action caused Brolin to respond defensively.

During the scene, Denzel Washington forcefully moved my hand away and exclaimed, “Never touch me like that!” Brolin recounted. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m about to fight Denzel Washington! This is unbelievable.’ But in his mind, he was merely playing his character. He was Frank Lucas, plain and simple. However, I wasn’t aware of this. After the tense moment passed, I asked him if he was alright. He replied affirmatively, and I requested to deliver my line. He allowed me to do so, as if he had already said what he needed to say.

Fortunately, matters did not worsen between them, and Brolin mentioned they have a good relationship currently. The strained dynamics between them contributed to the film’s success as it was praised by critics and even garnered two Oscar nominations: Best Art Direction and Best Supporting Actress.
