As a die-hard fan of musicals and someone who has seen every single performance of “Wicked” on Broadway multiple times, I am beyond excited for the release of “Wicked: Part 2.” Jon M. Chu’s vision for this beloved story is truly unique, and his insight into the themes of choices and consequences resonates deeply with me.
Director Jon M. Chu has shared some new details about Wicked: Part 2.
In U.S. movie theaters right now, you can catch the movie “Wicked,” directed by Chu. This is the initial installment of a two-part film series that brings to life the beloved Broadway show. The second part, titled “Wicked: Part 2,” will be released in November 2025.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chu provided some intriguing details about the storyline we can anticipate from the upcoming Wicked sequel.
What did Jon M. Chu say about Wicked: Part 2?
In other words, “Part 1 deals with decisions,” Chu explained, “and Part 2 is about the outcomes of those decisions. Making choices can be tough, and often the outcome isn’t as we anticipated. It can be isolating, it can be challenging.
He commented, “Movie 2 delves deep with questions like ‘Was this choice you made truly the right one?’
Director Chu, known for helming Now You See Me 2 (2016), Crazy Rich Asians (2018), and In the Heights (2021) among others, mentioned that Wicked: Part 2 could be a bit darker compared to its predecessor. However, he assured that the film will maintain a significant amount of brightness and humor throughout.
He continued, “There’s a lot of fun parts. We’ve not forgotten about that, but there’s a matureness and a nuance to it that we earn from the first movie. The second movie really gets to play with [that maturity].”
The actors in both Wicked films feature Cynthia Erivo portraying Elphaba Thropp, Ariana Grande playing Glinda Upland, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Michelle Yeoh in the role of Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard of Oz, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, and Peter Dinklage providing the voice for Doctor Dillamond.
