As a gamer with a knack for blockbuster movies, I must say, the recent box office duel between Wicked and Gladiator II has been quite the spectacle! While both films have made a strong entrance, it’s clear that Barbenheimer set the bar incredibly high this year. Comparing their opening weekends to Barbenheimer feels like comparing a freshman’s first game to Michael Jordan’s career highlights – impressive, but still got a long way to go.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve got my eyes on two hot titles right now: “Wicked” and “Gladiator II”. They’re both kicking off with a bang at the box office, but they’re not expected to make as big a splash in their opening weekend as Barbenheimer.
Right now, you can catch both “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” in theaters across the United States. The first one is a film version of the well-known Broadway musical, featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. On the other hand, “Gladiator II” is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2000 movie “Gladiator,” directed by Ridley Scott.
How much have Wicked and Gladiator II made at the box office so far?
By the given deadline, Universal Pictures is sharing that the preliminary earnings for Wicked this week from early screenings are approximately $19.2 million.
Around 750 U.S. theaters contributed about $2.5 million to the total of $19.2 million through Amazon Prime screenings. An additional $5.7 million was earned from early Wednesday screenings at 2,000 theaters, while Thursday previews generated approximately $11 million.
The movie is now expected to make more than $120 million by the end of the weekend.
At the same time, it’s being reported by Paramount Pictures that the earnings for Gladiator II currently stand at $6.5 million across 3,200 different venues. The movie is anticipating a total opening weekend income ranging from $59 million to $66 million.
According to the Deadline’s article, we often remind you to view these estimates cautiously on Thursdays. If the studio ends up reporting lower numbers, it doesn’t automatically imply that any movie lacks traction or momentum.
Initially, some have drawn parallels between the debut weekends of Gladiator II and Wicked, and that of the 2023 blockbuster sensation, Barbenheimer. However, it’s worth noting that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie had a more robust beginning, raking in $22.3 million during its Thursday previews, compared to Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-winning Oppenheimer which grossed $10.5 million on the same day. By the end of their respective box office runs, Barbie amassed approximately $1.446 billion, while Oppenheimer fell just short of a billion dollars, earning $976.8 million.
Wicked and Gladiator II are now both playing in theaters.
