The first glimpses of Dwayne Johnson as Maui have left me utterly captivated.
The initial images from the production of the live-action adaptation of Moana offer fans a sneak peek at Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of Maui. It was in April 2023 that news about the live-action Moana was announced, but as of yet, no specific date for its release has been set. Alongside Johnson as Maui, the character of Moana will be played by Catherine Laga‘aia.

Matt Desmond recently posted an initial glimpse of Dwayne Johnson’s portrayal of Maui in the upcoming live-action film, which gives us a sneak peek into his character.
In the images shared on X (previously Twitter), Johnson is pictured sporting a skirt crafted from green foliage and a black wig, displaying his tattooed physique. One image even shows him adorned with a necklace fashioned from whale teeth. Notably, he’s also depicted holding Maui’s iconic weapon.

After these photos of the set were published, fans have been speculating on social media whether the actor is wearing a bodysuit or not. Yet, there’s no confirmation about this from the actor himself. Johnson, who lends his voice to Maui in the animated film Moana, has another movie coming out – its sequel will be in theaters on November 27, 2024.
In a 2023 Instagram post, Dwayne Johnson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to bring the enchanting tale of Moana to the live-action cinema.
The actor portraying the Red One character was even more thrilled to discuss the connection between himself and Moana. He expressed that the narrative holds deep significance for him, being closely tied to his “background,” and he considers this tale to be symbolic of our people’s elegance. Additionally, the actor referred to playing Maui in a live-action setting as an extraordinary chance that doesn’t come around often.
According to Box Office Mojo, the movie Moana was widely praised both by critics and viewers, ultimately earning a grand total of $643 million.
