As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent navigating the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement for the upcoming changes to Star Wars Outlaws. The removal of forced stealth is like a breath of fresh air, offering more freedom and choice in how we approach missions.
Over the past week, I’ve been thrilled to learn that the folks at Massive Entertainment have been reconsidering numerous components of Star Wars Outlaws in preparation for its next significant update. With the game set to debut on Steam and the festive season just around the corner, it seems the team has seized an opportune moment for a do-over. Consequently, Title Update 1.4.0 will bring some substantial alterations, including the elimination of enforced stealth, a feature that’s been quite unappreciated in Outlaws.
According to Creative Director Drew Rechner on the Star Wars Outlaws site, one key move in broadening player options is getting rid of obligatory stealth from most mission targets. However, this doesn’t eliminate sneaking as a possible or even preferred method in certain instances. If you’re discovered while being stealthy, the quest won’t fail and send you back to a checkpoint; instead, it will transition smoothly into combat. We value the stealth playstyle and wanted to maintain it while also offering flexibility in how each mission is approached. In essence, players can choose to sneak, engage immediately in combat, or my personal favorite—sneak until detected and then fight your way out. If you do end up in a battle, you’ll get to experience the enhanced combat system detailed in our Dev Update #2.
In a friendly manner, I’d say the stealth aspect in Star Wars Outlaws was met with some criticism. Many players and experts felt it interfered with the game’s primary allure, which lies in its support for diverse playstyles. Even though our own Bill Lavoy didn’t detest it as much as most, he still pointed it out as a flaw in his review.
As a gamer excitedly anticipating Star Wars Outlaws on Steam, I’m thrilled about one significant shift – the elimination of compulsory stealth. This change, among others, is a testament to the new creative direction under Rechner, who recently stepped into the role of Creative Director, replacing Julian Gerighty earlier this month.
Keep an eye out for updates regarding Star Wars Outlaws’ future coming up this week. We’ve got an exciting Game Update Showcase planned, airing on Thursday, November 21 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time/1 p.m. Eastern Time on the Ubisoft Twitch channel.
