As a long-time admirer of Denzel Washington‘s incredible talent and resilience, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of respect for his recent revelation about his sobriety journey. It’s remarkable to think that this man, who has graced our screens with his powerful performances for decades, was once battling an addiction hidden behind the glamour of Hollywood.
Denzel Washington shared that he’s been abstaining from alcohol for a decade now. Previously, he admitted to consuming an amount equivalent to around two bottles of wine daily.
What did Denzel Washington say about his sobriety?
In a chat with Esquire Magazine, Washington candidly discussed his journey towards sobriety. He admitted to being a heavy wine drinker in the past, often splurging up to $4,000 on premium bottles. Typically, he would order two bottles at once and stretch his drinking throughout the day.
Washington shared, “I had a penchant for wine, but now I was consuming expensive bottles because they were available. Later on in those years, I’d phone Gil Turner’s Fine Wines & Spirits on Sunset Boulevard and request, ‘Send me two top-quality bottles.’ My wife would wonder why I only ordered two, to which I replied, ‘Because if I order more, I’ll drink more. So I restricted myself to two bottles, and I would finish both within a day.
In a revealing conversation, the esteemed actor shared insights into his journey’s origins, mentioning that it stemmed from wine tasting events. “Initially, my vision was all about wine tastings, and that’s exactly what it was at the start,” he reminisced. “That might seem trivial, but let me tell you, I sampled the finest wines. I truly savored the best.” said Washington.
Currently, at the age of 69, Washington reflects on the physical toll his past actions have taken, but proudly states that he has remained substance-free for a decade now, aiming to maintain this clean streak moving forward.
The Oscar winner stated, “I’ve caused significant harm to my body over time. Only the future will tell. However, I have been sober for the past 10 years and haven’t touched a drop since turning 60. Opportunities are arising for me now – it feels like being 70. It’s genuine, and it’s good. This is the final act of my life – if I get an additional 30 years, what do I want to accomplish? My mother lived to be 97.
In the coming years, you’ll find actor Washington appearing in director Ridley Scott’s new movie titled Gladiator II. This anticipated sequel is slated for a release on November 22, 2024.
