PlayStation Portal: Sony introduces cloud gaming

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say the recent updates to the PlayStation Portal have been nothing short of revolutionary. Having spent countless hours huddled around consoles, my living room often resembling a gaming battlefield more than a cozy sanctuary, this handheld device has finally given me the freedom to play my beloved PS5 titles on-the-go without sacrificing performance or comfort.

The portable gaming device known as the “PlayStation Portal” made its debut in November 2023, allowing PlayStation enthusiasts to engage in their favorite games remotely, no matter where their daily lives might lead them.

You can enjoy playing PS5 games on its 8-inch screen for up to six hours without recharging, and you’ll have ergonomically designed DualSense controllers at your sides for a pleasant gaming session.

Cloud gaming

Cloud gaming is playing a significant role in the world of video games. It offers gamers the opportunity to play games without requiring specific equipment, making it an appealing option instead of conventional console or PC gaming. This implies that even without the latest console or graphics card, one can still enjoy high-demand games.

Through cloud gaming, you can enjoy the game instantly on your device without much lag or loss of graphics quality.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m thrilled to hear about PlayStation’s ambitious strategies in the realm of cloud gaming. It’s fascinating to see how they’re stepping up their game, learning from the likes of Xbox, and pushing boundaries. This fierce competition is what sparks innovation, keeping our gaming experiences fresh and exciting!

Currently, the largest provider of cloud gaming is Microsoft, offering Xbox Game Pass Ultimate at a monthly price of €17.99. This service grants you access to an extensive collection of cloud-based games. Alternatives in the market include Nvidia GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, and Shadow.

PlayStation now extends its streaming service through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership, previously accessible solely on PS4 and PS5 gaming systems, thanks to a recent upgrade.

Cloud-Gaming: The update

Since we’re still refining the cloud streaming service, you’ll have to sign up for the Beta testing phase to give it a spin. Also, remember that you need an active PlayStation Plus subscription to participate.

To register and enable cloud streaming, follow these steps:

  1. Open the “Quick Menu” and go to “Settings” on your PS Portal.
  2. Select the “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” option.
  3. Activate “Cloud Streaming (Beta)” (it is disabled by default).

Once you enable Cloud Streaming from the settings, a fresh choice will show up on your PlayStation Portal’s main screen, giving you the ability to play games through cloud streaming.

Today, a significant update has been rolled out for the PlayStation Portal, introducing CLOUD GAMING functionality. This feature enables Premium subscribers to enjoy a collection of 120 games at a resolution of 1080p and 60 frames per second, even without a PS5.

In addition to cloud streaming, this update includes some significant enhancements in audio quality. Now, when you set the volume to its lowest, it will gradually decrease instead of producing abrupt loud noises.

Moreover, users now have the ability to adjust the volume of their PlayStation Link device straight from the PS Portal interface. This improvement simplifies the process of handling sound as users switch among various sources.

The update also brings minor tweaks to the user interface and general settings to improve usability.

An updated version of PlayStation Portal is set to launch today, offering the following enhancements:
