New Destiny 2 “depressing” nerf has players convinced Bungie hates Hunter

As a long-time Destiny 2 gamer with countless hours logged, I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened by the recent Combination Blow nerf in update 8.1.5. I’ve been a dedicated Hunter player since the beginning, and this feels like yet another jab at our class. It’s as if someone at Bungie has it out for us Hunters!

The latest update for Destiny 2, version 8.1.5, was released on November 19th. This substantial update marked the beginning of Act II in the Revenant storyline. Most of the changes and new features have been positively received by the Destiny 2 community. However, there’s a significant adjustment (a “discouraging” nerf) that has left players of the Hunter class feeling like someone at Bungie might not be fond of their chosen class.

Bungie enthusiasts can anticipate some exciting updates ahead: Marathon is in active development with potential release slated for next year, and Destiny Rising might follow suit. Regarding Destiny 2, Bungie has unveiled their Year 11 plan, which encompasses a wealth of new content slated from 2025 through to 2026.

In the meantime, as Year 11 promises excitement, D2 gamers are currently delving into the Tomb of Elders, courtesy of the start of Revenant Act II. While many have appreciated the changes brought by update 8.1.5, some Hunter players express dissatisfaction over the adjustment to Combination Blow.

Destiny 2 Combination Blow nerf has players convinced Bungie hates the Hunter class

On November 19th, Bungie posted the patch notes for Destiny 2 update 8.1.5, which was met with overwhelmingly positive and thankful reactions from fans on the game’s main Reddit forum.

Despite mostly positive feedback on the patch, some players are unhappy about the adjustment to Combination Blow for Hunters. Specifically, the reduction in bonus damage against enemies by approximately 17%, was implemented by Bungie.

In the replies, there are comments accusing Bungie of trying to “sneak” the nerf in without anyone noticing. Comments have called it “absolute bull” while remarking that nerfing someone’s favorite build doesn’t make them want to come back.

People have described it as “unexpected” and “coming from a surprising direction,” and some even find it “disheartening.” One user remarked, “I’m not sure anyone on the balance team could persuade me they don’t dislike Hunter.

Despite some players expressing frustration over the change, others find themselves puzzled as to why the adjustment was made in the first place. One user even found it strange that the Hunter’s Combination Blow was nerfed when Titans, who spam Consecration, are widely regarded as the top PvE choice instead.

A greater number of users expressed their agreement with the Titan comparison by stating, “Consecration spam is significantly more prevalent in end-game content than combination blow.” Another user found it hard to understand why the Combination Blow was nerfed when Titans can solo Grandmasters with Consecration.

Below are all of the Hunter changes in patch 8.1.5:

  • Storm’s Edge
    • Reduced height of damage impulse from 5m to 3.75m.
    • Reduced DR against players from 53% to 45%, both on cast and during the spin attack.
    • Moved from tier 3 to tier 1 Super cooldown.
  • Arc Staff, Golden Gun, Spectral Blades, Silkstrike
    • Increased Super energy gains per damage event against PvE combatants by roughly 3x.
    • Increased damage against Champions by 30-55% depending on Super.
    • Note: This change excludes the Celestial Nighthawk Golden Gun variant
  • Combination Blow
    • Reduced bonus damage against combatants by around 17%.
  • Stylish Executioner
    • Fixed a bug where some projectile melee attacks activated Stylish Executioner if the attack hit in the first frame of the projectile melee’s lifetime.
      • Stylish Executioner is only meant to work with physical melee attacks.
