As a dedicated follower of AR Rahman’s journey, it is heartbreaking to see his separation from Saira Banu after 29 years of marriage. However, I find myself drawn to the strength and grace that both individuals have demonstrated throughout their lives.
AR Rahman and his wife Saira Banu have chosen to go separate ways after 29 years of marriage. Their kids have asked for privacy as they navigate through this tough period. Instead of delving into the reasons for the renowned musician’s split, let’s explore more about Saira Banu instead.
Who is Saira Banu?
Saira Banu hails from a culturally affluent family in Kutch, Gujarat, born on December 20, 1973. She was raised with deep-rooted values and traditions that she embraced wholeheartedly. In keeping with her upbringing, Saira has consistently engaged in charitable activities to better society. Over the course of her life, she has been a steadfast supporter of AR Rahman’s philanthropic initiatives, particularly focusing on community development projects.
Regardless of the public attention, Saira chose to maintain a low profile when it came to her personal affairs. As a rule, they seldom made appearances at grand social functions as a pair. Nonetheless, their most recent public outing was at the Ambani wedding.
At one point, AR Rahman and Saira were like a perfect pair. In an old interview, the composer shared that back in 1994, he confided to his mother about wanting to get married. Luckily, both his mother and sister happened to visit a temple in Chennai where they encountered Saira’s family.
On the occasion of his 28th birthday, AR Rahman found himself meeting Saira for the first time. Following a quick exchange of words, they both felt a connection strong enough to make them partners. Exactly on March 12, 1995, in the presence of their dear ones and family members, the two lovebirds officially exchanged vows and got married.

He penned, “We had wished to celebrate thirty years together, but all things, it seems, have an unexpected conclusion. Even the seat of God might quake under the burden of shattered hearts. Yet, in this devastation, we search for purpose, though the fragments may never fit together again. To our friends, thank you for your compassion and for honoring our need for solitude as we navigate this delicate phase.
