Grey's Anatomy is about to head into a lengthy break on ABC

As a die-hard Grey’s Anatomy fan who’s been through more surgeries than I care to remember (okay, it’s just binge-watching seasons), this news about the show’s winter break hits me like a ton of bricks. Three and a half months without Meredith, Alex, and the gang feels like an eternity! But hey, at least we have reruns on Hulu to keep us company.

As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia when the annual hibernation of my favorite TV shows sets in. Yep, you guessed it, it’s the season where the screen goes quiet on beloved series like Grey’s Anatomy. Come Thursday, Nov 21 this year, they’ll be airing their final episode for a while, leaving us fans with a bit of a void to fill until spring.

The pause will last quite some time, and given the trends of the past few years, this might not come as much of a shock. Notably, it’s not just our show that’s getting an extended hiatus; the entire TGIT block is taking a break for several months before resuming with midseason premieres.

When will Grey’s Anatomy season 21 return?

ABC has scheduled January premieres and midseason returns; here’s the exciting news: Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 9 is set for Thursday, March 6. Yes, that means a three-and-a-half-month hiatus is coming our way! It’ll be tough, but it’ll definitely be worth the wait.

The show is set to resume alongside its TGIT series lineup. As always, 911 takes the lead, followed by episodes of Doctor Odyssey and Grey’s Anatomy. Once more, the long-running medical drama will air in the 10 p.m. ET/PT time slot.

One advantage of the extended hiatus is that it reduces the number of interruptions within the programming schedule, particularly during March and April when the week-on-week-off approach can be quite irritating. The fact that Grey’s isn’t returning in January is a relief since it eliminates the need to deal with those breaks. We are really enjoying the fact that Will Trent won’t return until January because it minimizes potential schedule disruptions!

What are the chances of Grey’s Anatomy being renewed?

At this point in the year, we assess if series will be terminated or extended. Given the enduring popularity of Grey’s on ABC, we’re optimistic about a renewal. This is a show that has earned a grand finale and receiving a final season order seems more fitting than an unexpected cancellation.

Currently, the ABC show you’re referring to is ranked lowest among its fellow ABC shows based on linear ratings. However, it’s important to note that there are just five scripted shows airing right now. Given that the program airs at 10 p.m. ET/PT, it’s not surprising that it struggles a bit since this time slot is historically challenging. It’s worth mentioning that established shows generally perform better in this time slot compared to newer series.

We need to monitor the situation once shows like “Will Trent” and “The Rookie” come back on. It will be intriguing to see how Thursday nights fare against reality shows and broadcasts of a Hulu series. If they do well, it could potentially cause issues for “Grey’s Anatomy”, but given the lack of competing scripted shows, things seem promising for its renewal.

On Thursday, November 21st at 10 PM or 9 PM Central Time, you can watch the autumn finale of “Grey’s Anatomy” on ABC. If you want to refresh your memory about previous episodes, you can catch up on the season on Hulu.
