As a devoted fan of The Equalizer since the original series graced our screens back in 1985, I must say that CBS’s decision to expand this iconic franchise with a spin-off is nothing short of exhilarating! Growing up watching Denzel Washington’s portrayal of Robert McCall was a formative experience for me, and now, witnessing Queen Latifah breathe new life into the character has been an absolute joy.
CBS is considering expanding the Queen Latifah-led The Equalizer with a spin-off series.
In October, the crime drama that’s a revival of the original Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim series made a comeback for its fifth season. Starting from Episode 16, CBS is planning to debut two fresh characters as part of their strategy to start a brand new series.
CBS eyes 2 co-leads for potential The Equalizer spin-off
According to Deadline’s latest reports, the casting process has begun for Season 5, Episode 16. The network is in search of two characters: a young, skilled female martial artist with proficiency in weapons, who may need Queen Latifah’s character, Robyn McCall, as assistance; and an older male, previously associated with the CIA.
In simpler terms, both characters have been cast in recurring roles that could potentially turn into main characters if the spin-off is produced. If the spin-off is approved, it would be a first for The Equalizer franchise to deviate from its single lead character structure, as seen in the original 1985 series, the Denzel Washington movies, and the current CBS show with Queen Latifah at the helm.
It’s worth mentioning that the upcoming episode, due for broadcast in the spring, won’t serve as a backdoor pilot – a strategy CBS has employed for other successful shows by introducing new characters to gauge potential spin-offs from regular episodes. This method was previously used in Fire Country, where Morena Baccarin played a guest role and is now set to lead Sheriff Country.
The story revolves around Robyn McAll, a woman shrouded in mystery whose past involves the CIA. Now, she employs her vast knowledge and abilities honed from her days as a spy to assist those who have no other options.
Besides Queen Latifah playing the main role, this popular crime drama additionally features Lorraine Toussaint as Aunt Vi, Tory Kittles as Marcus Dante, Adam Goldberg as Harry Keshegian, Liza Lapira portraying Mel, and Laya DeLeon Hayes taking on the character of Delilah.
