Warner Bros. and Parasite Distributor Make Deal for English & Korean Remakes

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for movies, particularly those that push the boundaries of storytelling and cinematography, I find the recent partnership between Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group and CJ ENM to be nothing short of exhilarating!

Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group has struck an exciting new deal with CJ ENM.

CJ ENM Films & Television, previously known as CJ Entertainment, is a South Korean business that specializes in entertainment, filmmaking, and movie distribution. This company has collaborated on several films by Bong Joon-ho, such as Snowpiercer (2013) and Parasite (2019), as well as Decision to Leave (2022) and others.

Through an agreement, Warner Bros. and CJ ENM are collaborating to produce both English-speaking and Korean-speaking adaptations of their respective films. Essentially, this partnership grants Warner Bros.’ Motion Picture Group the right to create English-language remakes from CJ ENM’s collection of movies, while CJ ENM gains the ability to produce Korean-language versions of Warner Bros. films.

What else do we know about the Warner Bros. and CJ ENM deal?

According to an article by Variety, each studio is tasked with creating and producing their own remakes. However, other companies will offer suggestions regarding creative aspects such as the scriptwriter, director, producer, actors, and budget. Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute all films worldwide, except for CJ ENM who will be in charge of releasing its remakes in South Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Turkey.

Warner Bros.’ CEOs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy expressed in a statement their enthusiasm for partnering with CJ ENM, stating that CJ Vice Chairwoman Miky Lee and her team have crafted an impressive collection of films throughout history, making CJ ENM a dominant force in Korean cinema. These movies touch audiences worldwide, and Warner Bros. is eager to collaborate with CJ ENM as they aim to expand their movie portfolio globally.

Jerry Kyoungboum Ko of CJ ENM commented, “Warner Bros. boasts a timeless collection spanning both classic and contemporary Hollywood, overflowing with quality. Warner Bros. and CJ have collectively amassed extensive libraries in North America and Asia, each with their distinctive flair. This union allows us to unearth forgotten treasures and breathe new life into them, sharing compelling narratives with modern viewers. It’s an honor to collaborate with a legendary brand that consistently innovates, creates, and elevates storytelling at the zenith.

No projects that have come out of the deal have been officially announced at this time.
