As a dedicated player of The First Descendant since its launch earlier this year, I’ve experienced the highs and lows that come with any new game release. However, one persistent issue that has been a thorn in my side is the problem of AFK players. It’s like showing up for a dinner party only to find half the guests have ghosted you without so much as a RSVP.
Nexon consistently strives to enhance The First Descendant, and they’ve been doing an excellent job since its release this year. There are numerous improvements in the pipeline, including new characters, skins, content, and extra features. However, one persistent issue that players have longed for a solution to is AFK players. Although it remains frustrating, the director of The First Descendant has disclosed planned matchmaking adjustments aimed at shielding fans from annoying AFK players.
For the future of TFD, there are numerous plans in motion. Nexon is currently evaluating potential collaborations with other IPs, and they’ve hinted at incorporating “jiggle physics” down the line. The developer has also acknowledged fan requests for a price adjustment on Season 2 skins, and Nexon has confirmed that reworks are imminent for Valby and Luna characters.
For Season 2, the freshly unveiled content looks thrilling, and the developers are giving us a sneak peek into their future strategies via social media. Among these strategies, one particularly interesting point is the expansion of matchmaking choices for multiplayer games.
The First Descendant planned matchmaking options to avoid AFK players
Besides the game’s producer from The First Descendant, the director has also been actively engaging with the community on Discord, addressing questions as well.
In a discussion forum about games, someone asked for opinions on individuals who start events like the 400% Colossi or dungeons or waves but then depart before the event starts or abandon them midway with no explanation.
The TFD Director, Jooms, expressed apologies on behalf of Nexon for any trouble caused due to players who are AFK (Away From Keyboard) or those who abandon games prematurely. He mentioned that Nexon is consistently keeping tabs on AFK behavior by analyzing reports and utilizing an internal detection system.
It has been disclosed that “Chronic AFK (Away From Keyboard) players are being grouped into a unique matchmaking pool temporarily.” This is excellent news because it suggests that frequent AFK offenders and those who abandon games prematurely will be paired together, but this arrangement will last only for a specific duration.
In simpler terms, the director confessed that it’s challenging for gamers to dodge AFK (Away From Keyboard) cheaters because the current multiplayer setup mainly depends on automatic matching, which gives players few choices to control the quality of these matches.
To resolve this issue, Jooms suggested, “We’re convinced that by implementing features such as ‘Party Finder,’ we can offer more choices and enhance the overall user experience.” The director also mentioned that Nexon is contemplating “two types of matchmaking: private (including solo play) and public,” emphasizing this as a key strategy. Moreover, they are planning to incorporate private matchmaking options for special operations too.
