As a long-time admirer of Elton John and his illustrious career, it is truly heartwarming to see him express such profound love for his family life. His decision to step away from touring to be there for his sons speaks volumes about his commitment as a parent and partner. It’s clear that the accolades, fame, and success in music are all secondary to the joy he derives from being a later-in-life dad.
Elton John expressed that becoming a father later in life, along with raising his two sons with husband David Furnish, is the most remarkable experience of his life. He shared this sentiment during a conversation with Andy Cohen on the SiriusXM Logo show “Radio Andy.” Additionally, John discussed why he decided to stop touring, and he emphasized the immense joy being a father brings him. The iconic British musician and Furnish have been a couple for over three decades, and they welcomed their children – born via surrogacy in 2010 and 2013 – into their loving family.
Elton John said this about being an older father
Speaking candidly with Andy Cohen, I, as a gamer might put it, can confidently say that becoming a father and sharing this journey with my husband has been the most extraordinary accomplishment in my life. Despite an unparalleled life filled with incredible music experiences, fame, and a lasting legacy, nothing compares to the love and bond I share with my sons. This is why I decided to step back from touring – I want to be present and available for them as we navigate the latter part of our lives together.
For over three decades, the singer has been in a long-lasting relationship with his partner, David Furnish. Known for his work as a filmmaker and advertising executive in the past, Furnish and the singer first crossed paths at a dinner party hosted by a mutual friend in 1993. They had their initial date the following day, according to PEOPLE’s reporting. The couple officially registered their civil partnership nine years prior to getting married in 2014, following the legalization of same-sex marriage in the UK.
In his chat with Andy Cohen, Elton John expressed support for individuals who are gay and choose to raise children, stating that “it’s certainly possible.” He then countered those who oppose this arrangement by saying, “Of course, it can happen.” Later on, he praised Cohen for being a great father, referring back to an earlier point in their conversation.
The Grammy winner also had a message for other gay parents, saying, “It’s the greatest gift you could possibly have.” He further claimed that becoming a father is the best gift he has had in life and “wouldn’t swap it for anything.”
In the year 2010 and 2013 respectively, Elton John and David Furnish became parents to their sons, Zachary and Elijah, through the same surrogate mother.
