As a seasoned gamer who has seen more than my fair share of cheaters and boosters in competitive multiplayer games, I am thrilled to see the efforts Activision and Treyarch are making with their anti-cheat updates for Black Ops Cold War’s Ranked Play mode. The advanced AFK detection, stricter ping thresholds, manual review for account renaming, and live detection systems all sound like much-needed steps to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for everyone.
It’s no secret that playing Ranked can be more fulfilling than just the regular random multiplayer matchmaking. There’s a certain edge to giving it your all and rising through the ranks. Treyarch and Activision have introduced several updates to Black Ops 6 to improve the competitive gameplay in the upcoming Ranked mode. Many of them address disruptive behaviours, while others focus on the accessibility of the mode itself. Stay tuned as we answer when is Ranked coming to BO6, how to participate, ranked rewards and features, and how Ricochet anti-cheat features in the equation.
When does Ranked Play launch in Black Ops 6?
The competitive gameplay for Black Ops 6 is scheduled to debut on November 21, 2024, which means you’ll soon be able to participate in rankings from that date forward. With Season 1 kicking off on November 14, this will represent one of the shortest intervals Call of Duty players have ever had to endure before accessing a ranked leaderboard – just seven days since the beginning of the first season.
How to unlock Ranked mode?
To access the Ranked Play, you first need to fulfill a specific condition: win 50 matches made with other players online. Once achieved, the Ranked mode will be available for your use, allowing you to dive right into the competition. These victories can stem from any multiplayer game mode, as long as they were won. Additionally, wins accumulated during the pre-season are still valid, and there is no longer a Player Level requirement.
Ranked play features
Several new features have made it into BO6’s ranked mode, so we’ll break them down below.
New ranking system
In BO6, the traditional hierarchies and distinctions between skills have been merged, resulting in a single ranking system called Skill Rating (SR). This system consists of eight different levels to represent your standing.
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Crimson
- Iridescent
- Top 250
In simpler terms, this change indicates that you no longer need to accumulate Victory Stars; instead, you’ll be gaining Season Rank (SR) points which will help boost your rank in the tier system. The specifics of how placements and score differences will function once Ranked mode goes live are yet to be clarified.
Map and game mode veto system
In the next ranked match, your team and the opponents will each have an opportunity to choose one map or game mode that they don’t want to play from the three available in the lobby. This way, we can influence our selection for the upcoming game. Both teams will make their selections blindly, meaning if both sides veto the same option, the game will randomly select one of the two remaining options for us.
Forfeit
In simpler terms, the new Forfeit feature enables a team that’s missing one or more players (due to disconnections, quitting, etc.) to conclude the game prematurely. But remember, you can’t just forfeit at the beginning; there are specific rules based on the game mode that apply before the match can be ended.
- Hardpoint: the winning team has to reach 100 points first
- Control: you can forfeit after the first round is over
- Search & Destroy: you can forfeit after the third round.
Party skill restrictions
In Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, players at any skill level can form teams to play together. But remember, when it comes to matching with other groups, the system considers the highest-ranked player in your party. This could be challenging if the difference in ranks among your friends is significant. This rule applies regardless of whether you’re queuing as a duo or a trio.
Seasonal setbacks
Instead of adjusting player SR ratings at the end of each season with a separate system, ranks might be revised based on one’s final position from the previous season. When the new season begins, there’s a chance your rank will be reset accordingly. This is how it affects individual standings:
- Bronze or Silver Rank: These players are not impacted by the Seasonal setback and will be able to pick up where they ended the previous Season with no loss of SR.
- Gold or Platinum Rank: These players will start the next Season in Tier I of their previous rank.
- Diamond and above Rank: These players will start the next Season at the Diamond I tier.
Loss forgiveness system
The old system for granting forgiveness has been revised to incorporate BO6 Ranked Play. This means that regardless of your current rank, your first defeat of the day will no longer lead to a decrease in your Season Rank (SR). Furthermore, upon reaching a new rank or at the start of a new season, you’ll be given three bonus games where losing won’t cause a reduction in your SR. These three games can only be used after losses; therefore, winning won’t diminish your “freebies”. However, these benefits cannot be combined, so you won’t have the opportunity to accumulate multiple free loss opportunities.
Ranked mode rewards
In competitive play, you can collect a variety of prizes as you rise to the top. Your initial journey into ranked matches begins with the basic Competitor operator status, and once you surpass Gold rank, each subsequent rank achieved will provide you with unique skins for that specific operator. These skins are immediately unlocked upon ranking up, so there’s no need to wait until the season concludes to receive them. The players who manage to reach the Top 250 rank will be rewarded with exclusive Competitor skins, and the highest-ranked player in Ranked mode can even earn the Champion skin.
Moreover, you have the option to finish competitive challenges for additional prizes such as new Competitor character skins, a knife design plan, a Frag Grenade appearance modification, a win tracker screen for Ranked matches, and other assorted rewards. These bonuses aren’t tied to specific seasons and can be earned throughout your ranked gaming journey.
Ricochet anti-cheat updates for ranked play
Getting ready for the debut of Ranked Play’s first season, Activision and Treyarch have been diligently refining their anti-cheat system, Ricochet. As a dedicated fan, I can appreciate their efforts to reduce the number of cheaters once ranked mode goes live, as we all understand how aggravating it is to encounter them in gameplay. Here’s what they’ve been focusing on:
- AFK Detection: To prevent account boosting, Black Ops 6 now includes advanced AFK detection. This system helps identify players who are intentionally leaving matches idle to artificially boost their rank without actively participating.
- Ping Threshold Adjustments: To combat VPN abuse and ensure players are matched with others from their region, the game will now enforce stricter ping thresholds. This adjustment forces players to play in their designated region, which helps reduce unfair advantages gained by manipulating connection speeds.
- Manual Review for Account Renaming: To further secure the integrity of Ranked Play, players at Crimson rank or higher will now face a manual review for any account renaming requests. This additional step helps prevent players from using name changes to evade penalties or manipulate the system.
- Live Detection Systems: The detection systems initially deployed at launch to gather data and test their effectiveness will now be fully activated with Ranked Season 1. These systems will actively flag suspicious accounts for action based on patterns of cheating, boosting, or other disruptive behaviour.
As a devoted player, I’m thrilled to share that the same updates intended for the Ranked Multiplayer mode will also be implemented in the upcoming Ranked Play of Warzone during the mid-season launch. These enhancements, focusing on security, will undoubtedly improve both gaming experiences. However, it’s essential to note that we’ll need to experience the start of each ranked mode to truly appreciate their impact and effectiveness.
