Overwatch 1 is back, and it gave us a serious reality check...

As a gamer who has been playing Overwatch since its inception, I must say that diving into the Overwatch: Classic event feels like stepping back into my high school days – and not always in a good way! The nostalgia trip is wild, but it’s also a stark reminder of how far we’ve come.

Currently, Overwatch 2 is dominating the Overwatch Classic tournament, offering gamers a chance to experience the original release of Overwatch from 2016. Upon trying it out, we stumbled upon an astonishing revelation…

Overwatch: Classic Event brings back trauma

Ever since Overwatch debuted in 2016, I’ve been hooked on it right away, and it’s remained a consistent part of my life throughout high school and beyond. When Overwatch 2 came out, I had reservations about the transition from 6v6 to 5v5 gameplay and the numerous hero balance tweaks. At first, it seemed like some of the game’s magic was gone. However, as time passed, I came to appreciate the modifications and found myself growing fonder of the updated version.

Overwatch 1 is back, and it gave us a serious reality check...

Currently, the Overwatch: Classic event by Blizzard has arrived, and it’s an exhilarating journey back in time. This event recaptures all elements from the game’s debut in 2016 – the classic 6v6 gameplay mode, old map layouts, and the initial mechanics that made battles both unpredictable and thrilling.

Until November 19th, players have a chance to immerse themselves in the retro “no-hero-limit” mode. This means that teams can field up to six identical heroes. The powerful abilities of characters like Hanzo with his Scatter Arrow, Mercy with her mass Resurrect, and Symmetra with her teleporting chaos will be fully operational during this period.

Of course, we all dived right into that gathering to reminisce about our past times. But, let me assure you, it didn’t go as planned – it turned out to be quite a debacle instead.

Back in the day, I’d forgotten how imbalanced Overwatch used to feel. The 6v6 battles seemed overly packed, and having two tanks on a team was almost too much power. Mercy’s previous ultimate had the potential to turn a match around in a heartbeat, and Bastion, oh boy, let me tell you, Bastion was a terror.

Following several intense and unpredictable matches, we found ourselves returning to Overwatch 2. It was then that we realized: perhaps our criticism of Blizzard’s adjustments might have been a bit harsh. Indeed, Overwatch 2 exhibits differences, but it also showcases a more polished, balanced, and orderly experience compared to its predecessor.

If you’re keen on reminiscing, take a spin with the original version of Overwatch. Keep in mind though, it might be a bit chaotic – and could offer some eye-opening insights.
