As a fan who has lived and breathed Cobra Kai since its inception, I must say that Part 2 of this season has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions. The tension, the turmoil, the heartache – it’s all been masterfully crafted to keep us hooked.
As a devoted fan, I’m finding it troubling that my beloved Miyagi-Do is off-kilter. In a gripping five-episode segment, we’re reminded of the emotional bonds shared by our main characters and the high stakes at play in the upcoming Sekai Taikai tournament. By the end of Part 1, the team finds themselves confronting a harsh truth: Tory, who once deserted Miyagi-Do, has returned to side with John Kreese and Cobra Kai, taking on the role of Captain for their opposing dojo.
This realization strikes both Sam and Robby deeply, as they had recently formed a strong friendship with each other, while Tory and Robby’s relationship had been growing steadily.
In Part 2, the simmering resentments and frustrations from Part 1 come to a head. For instance, Miguel feels let down that Robby was selected as Captain instead of him, Hawk and Demetri harbor anger about their college choices, with Demetri fixating on MIT, and Daniel and Johnny struggle to find common ground. All these unresolved issues culminate in Part 2, as Miyagi-Do finds themselves fighting together but out of step.
A fundamental concept in Miyagi-Do is maintaining equilibrium, which significantly influences how students relate to one another. This idea has evolved throughout the course of the series, as many of these companions initially began as adversaries.
As a devoted fan, I must say that Part 1 of this story masterfully lays the groundwork for tension and emotional resonance. However, when it comes to the execution in Part 2, it’s almost flawless!
Daniel’s emotionally charged storyline of investigating the truth behind Mr. Miyagi’s past, even if it stirs controversy, significantly impacts how he fulfills his role as a sensei when his beliefs about the man who taught him are challenged. Previously, Daniel had held Mr. Miyagi in great reverence, viewing him as nearly infallible. However, while Mr. Miyagi may have been wise by the time he trained Daniel in “The Karate Kid,” this plotline in “Cobra Kai” suggests that there was much more to Mr. Miyagi’s life before then – a life filled with ups and downs as he navigated his path towards understanding balance. Although the details of Mr. Miyagi’s past remain somewhat unclear in Part 2, “Cobra Kai” does an interesting job of portraying Mr. Miyagi not just as a perfect figure, but as a human being with flaws and a journey to redemption.
Previously, the on-off relationship between Sam and Miguel often dominated the romantic storylines among the teen characters in the series. But since Cobra Kai has placed them in a stable relationship now, Part 2 shifts its focus towards the repercussions of Tory’s choice as a tumultuous emotional turmoil unfolds between her and Robby.
Robby’s struggle to focus negatively affects his performance and leaves his teammates and pals feeling irritated. Conversely, Tory’s internal conflicts over whether she made the right choice and the repercussions it has on her relationship with Robby contribute significantly to Part 2’s plot development.
In Part 2, it’s all about dealing with sorrow, pain, and conflicts as Miyagi-Do works to resolve the underlying tension between them. By addressing these internal conflicts, they aim to rebuild their bonds as friends, family, and a united team. This way, they can rise above their challenges and be the best versions of themselves once more.
In these five episodes, Cobra Kai shines brightly compared to Miyagi-Do, which might not be performing at its peak. Each character plays a crucial role in advancing the plot as we approach the finale of Part 3. The final scenes of Part 2 deliver some of the most thrilling fight sequences that Cobra Kai has ever produced, and the suspenseful cliffhanger promises more excitement when Part 3 premieres.
