As a die-hard DC fan who’s been following the intricacies of the universe since the days of Christopher Reeve’s Superman, I must say that James Gunn’s latest revelation about Peacemaker has me both excited and puzzled. The fact that nearly everything from Season 1 is canon to the forthcoming DCU, except for one crucial scene involving the Justice League, has left me scratching my head.
James Gunn indicates that almost all events depicted in Season 1 of “Peacemaker” are canonical within the upcoming DC Universe, with only a single pivotal scene being an exception.
In January 2022, the first season of Peacemaker, developed by Gunn, made its debut. This series is a spin-off from The Suicide Squad released in 2021 and falls within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The DCEU concluded with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023. Currently, Gunn and Peter Safran are working on a fresh chapter for the DC universe, known as the DCU, which will officially commence next month with the animated Creature Commandos series.
Previously, Gunn mentioned that Peacemaker Season 2 will unfold within the DC Universe (DCU) and will essentially restart the show’s narrative as a “reboot with a soft touch.” He has also encouraged fans to be patient, promising that the storyline will become clearer once the fresh episodes are released.
What from Peacemaker Season 1 isn’t canon to the DCU?
As I excitedly chat with Rolling Stone, I can confirm that the happenings in Peacemaker Season 1 undeniably form part of the narrative for Season 2 and the broader DC Universe. However, there’s a solitary instance where things might deviate.
Essentially, everything about Peacemaker, except for its connection with Justice League, has been established as true according to cannon. However, we’ll address that point more thoroughly in the upcoming season of Peacemaker.
In the final episode of Season 1 of Peacemaker, some members of the Justice League, including Aquaman (portrayed by Jason Momoa) and The Flash (Ezra Miller), made a brief appearance towards the end. This scene was meant to be humorous as the Justice League discovered they had arrived too late to aid in the fight against the Butterflies, causing John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, to express frustration.
It’s yet unclear how Peacemaker Season 2 will introduce the Justice League, given that the actors from the 2017 ensemble film or the 2021 Zack Snyder cut won’t be returning to the DC Universe for their roles.
Peacemaker Season 2 will premiere in August 2025 on Max.
