When is the Beyond Bars release date?

On December 3, 2024, “Beyonds Bars” – a documentary directed by Robert Greenwald and produced with Casey Cooper Johnson – will be available for rental or purchase on all North American digital HD platforms including the internet, cable, and satellite services, as well as on DVD. Joining Boudin in the film are Kathy Boudin, David Gilbert, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dorhn, Zayd Ayers-Dorhn, and Kaylah Williams.

The documentary follows the personal quest of Chesa Boudin, ex-District Attorney of San Francisco, who is the son of imprisoned Weather Underground activists. From his youth marked by incarceration to his role as an advocate for restorative justice, this tale encompasses trauma, resilience, and optimism. By age 14 months, Chesa’s parents, former Weather Underground members, were arrested and convicted for their involvement in a deadly robbery.

This film chronicles the profound journey of Boudin, as we, the audience, observe the effects of parental imprisonment through Chesa’s perspective. He struggles with a flawed system and seeks to define his identity while navigating these challenges. With raw authenticity, BEYOND BARS portrays Chesa’s transformation from grappling with personal struggles to emerging as an advocate for children of incarcerated individuals and a trailblazing District Attorney championing reform. Intimate conversations and unique archival material provide a candid view of the emotional cost of imprisonment and the strength of resilience. Through Chesa’s fight for his parents’ release and his quest to improve the prison system, BEYOND BARS serves as a powerful reminder of the indestructible bonds within families and the ongoing struggle for intergenerational justice and restorative practices.
