As a long-time action movie enthusiast who has seen more blockbusters than I can count, I must admit that I was looking forward to Red One. The prospect of seeing Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans team up for a Christmas adventure sounded like an exciting proposition. However, after its underwhelming debut at the box office, I find myself feeling a bit let down.
In a surprising turn of events, the film titled “Red One,” starring Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans, has had a less-than-stellar premiere at the cinema. Contrasting with its reported production cost of $250 million, the initial weekend earnings for this holiday-themed movie were rather modest. The plot revolves around a mission to save Christmas, with Johnson’s and Evans’ characters joining forces to unravel the mystery behind Santa Claus’ disappearance. Interestingly enough, J.K. Simmons portrays the beloved figure of Santa in this production.
Red One wins domestic box office opening despite a sluggish start
Dwayne Johnson’s holiday film premiered in theaters on November 15, 2024, but unfortunately, it didn’t create a significant stir at the ticket counter.
In its debut weekend, the movie was screened in 4,032 theaters across North America, where it accumulated a total of $34 million domestically. Globally, its earnings reached $84 million. However, considering its production budget of approximately $250 million and additional costs for marketing, the studio might find the opening weekend earnings somewhat underwhelming.
Despite facing strong competition, Johnson’s new movie has emerged victorious, outperforming Tom Hardy’s Venom: The Last Dance in its fourth week. Previously, Venom 3 had held the top spot for three consecutive weeks with earnings of around $7.3 million domestically. In contrast, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever brought in approximately $5.4 million over the weekend.
Besides issues related to its reception among collectors, it appears that Red One hasn’t been warmly received by film critics either. The movie currently holds a Rotten Tomatometer score of 33%, but surprisingly, it has managed to earn an audience rating of 90% on the Popcornmeter, as reported by Rotten Tomatoes.
Upcoming releases, Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2 and Ariana Grande’s Wicked: Part One, are expected to pose significant competition for other movies. They both are scheduled for a theater release on November 22, 2024, and it’s anticipated that they will open with a larger audience than Red One.
