As a long-time follower of esports and especially Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, I’ve seen my share of ups and downs, but none quite like the situation Astralis finds itself in now. The news about device taking an extended break once again is disheartening, not just for his team, but for the entire CS community.
Danish individual mentioned that he needs some time away because he’s experiencing a reoccurrence of health issues linked to stress, which have affected his work in the past.
device is out for the rest of the year!
Nicola “Device” Reedtz shared on Twitter that he would be taking some time off, which is a significant blow to the team Astralis.
Instead, Alexander “br0” Bro, who was previously sidelined in September after Casper “cadiaN” Møller joined the team, will temporarily return to the active roster.
In this scenario, Cadian assumes the main sniper position within the team alongside his role as the in-game leader. This shift poses a tough challenge for Astralis, particularly due to device’s absence which places them in an underdog position within their competitive European RMR B group. With their star AWPer out of the picture, Astralis’ chances of qualifying for the Shanghai Major have noticeably decreased.
The move by the device to take a break offers a stark warning about the mental health struggles often encountered by esports professionals, a problem Device has experienced before.
2022 found me taking a prolonged hiatus from the Ninjas in Pyjamas roster, mainly due to recurring health issues. This break eventually stretched into a complete season’s rest.
At PGL Stockholm 2021, I, as Device (a gamer’s nickname), was present for the last Major tournament I attended. Since then, unfortunately, I’ve missed five in succession:

After coming back with Astralis, Device appeared to have regained consistency and delivered exceptional displays, which makes this recent setback even more surprising.
The announcement has sparked concern and well-wishes across the CS community. device’s skill, consistency, and professionalism have made him a fan favorite for many years.
For both his supporters and teammates, his health is of utmost importance. While he works diligently on his recovery, there’s a collective hope that the former four-time Major champion will regain his peak performance in time for the 2025 season, which we all eagerly anticipate.
It’s unfortunate to witness the device having to skip such an important match, especially with Astralis performing well.

At the RMR tournament, Astralis’ team composition will surely notice the void left by their teammate. cadiaN has been assigned the dual responsibilities of strategizing as an In-Game Leader (IGL) and handling the AWP role.
Despite Br0 contributing skill and enthusiasm to the team, the recent shifts in the roster might prove overwhelmingly challenging for Astralis, given the highly competitive RMR B group they find themselves in.
We hope the device makes a speedy and successful recovery on its journey and we look forward to seeing it back in action during the 2025 season, rejuvenated mentally and physically.
What do you think? Can Astralis still qualify for the Major, despite not having device with them?
