As a long-time fan of 911, I must say that the addition of Callum Blue as Brad has been nothing short of electrifying! The British actor’s charisma and charm have undeniably breathed new life into the series, adding an exciting twist to our beloved characters’ lives.
It looks like Callum Blue is staying on 911 a bit longer and likely causing a lot of fuss!
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for 911 Season 8
As Season 8 of 911 commenced, Bobby, who had previously been with the 118 team, found himself retired and replaced by the authoritative Gerrard (portrayed by Brian Thompson). In his new role as a consultant for an emergency-themed TV show titled Hotshots, Bobby helped add a touch of humor to the series, while striving to maintain a semblance of realism, disregarding the outlandish incidents he had encountered during his time on the job.
Bobby formed a connection with the main character, Brad (Callum Blue), who was somewhat haughty but took a liking to Bobby. Notably, when the team assisted Athena in landing an injured plane, Brad also pitched in. Later, Brad extended a full-time job offer on the show to Bobby. However, instead of accepting it himself, Bobby facilitated Gerrard taking up the consultant position while he went back to the 118 unit.
In the most recent installment, the team found themselves in an authentic emergency situation while filming Hotshots, due to a mishap during a stunt. Notably, there were disagreements between Brad and Gerrard, as one might expect with such large personalities at play. Brad attempted to persuade Bobby to rejoin their duo for dinner outings. However, the evening took an unexpected turn when Brad had an argument with a waitress over a minor error in his meal order. The incident was captured on video, and Bobby could be heard telling Brad to quiet down or face potential physical retaliation.
Bobby thought his time in Hollywood had come to an end, so it caught him off guard when Brad unexpectedly appeared at the fire station. Brad mentioned that he was captivated by Bobby’s authenticity, appreciating that finally, someone genuine was present in his circle. While the producers of Hotshots kept Bobby’s character in a coma until the scandal passed, Brad had secretly planned to observe Bobby at work for research purposes, which is why he had been hanging around the station.
So just how long will Callum Blue be on 911?
What’s coming for Brad on 911?
In conversation with TV Insider, Callum Blue shared his astonishment over the transformation of what he initially believed as a temporary role into something that appears on a recurring basis.
It was a surprise and a shock to me—and I think everybody—that he’s still around for sure. Because when I first auditioned it was for a guest star, which means mostly one episode, and then it just kept going and going and going. I’m a little bit on a parallel with Brad because as soon as I got to that set, and I felt the high vibration of the set and how brilliant the writers were and how beautiful the actors were and everything, I did kind of think in my head, I’m going to manifest some more of this because this feels good. And I’m a pretty good manifester. So it started to happen and I’m very, very happy that it did.
It’s only natural that the team will need to accommodate Brad joining them, including sharing emergency rides with him. Blue mentions that Brad admires Bobby due to his authenticity compared to those he socializes with. Nevertheless, there’s a concern as Brad remains quite outspoken and arrogant in his acting role, potentially leading to complications.
I don’t think Brad even knows what is real at all. I think for Brad, everything is an act. Everything is a performance, and like all of us, I think it’s the human journey, he is searching for that something that is real and authentic and feels like he is worthy in the world. And that’s what we’re exploring. So on the surface, it’s this kind of clownish character, funny and big and brash. But what the writers have done, which I’m so full of appreciation for, is they’ve explored the inner world of him as well. And that’s what we get to see in the next couple of episodes. Brad is used to being number one on the call sheet. Brad is used to being the star, and that’s where the chaos ensues because when you’ve got somebody with an ego that big who wants to be the star, and it’s all about him trying to be a hero saving people, that is a bit of a conundrum, to say the least.
Blue hints at an upcoming scene featuring Brad and Eddie, which he describes as “emotional” and potentially revealing more about Brad. He explains that this encounter will involve a British actor butting heads with the practical firefighters and paramedics, yet still maintaining a friendly relationship with Bobby. Bobby is shown attempting to keep the character out of trouble, fearing that Brad might blur the lines between fiction and reality.
It seems that Brad is going to stay with 911 for quite some time, which might lead to some troubles but also brings more excitement to the show.
911 Season 8 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
