Could Levi return to Grey's Anatomy? Jake Borelli shares his hopes!

As a long-time fanatic of Grey’s Anatomy who’s watched the characters grow and evolve since season one, I must admit that Levi’s departure left me with a bittersweet feeling – like a well-cooked steak that you can’t stop savoring even as you know it’s time to say goodbye.

It appears that the character Levi exited “Grey’s Anatomy,” but his actor expresses optimism that he could reappear; here’s what Jake Borelli shares on the matter.

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 7

Supporters of “Grey’s Anatomy” were aware that Midori Francis would be departing the show. The most recent episode depicted Mika and her sister Chloe in a severe car crash, causing distress among the medical team as they worked tirelessly to save one of their colleagues. Among those deeply affected was Jules, who felt responsible for changing shifts with Mika, leaving her fatigued.

It was touch and go, but the good news was Mika pulled through after a couple of days in a coma. The bad news was she had to wake up to Bailey breaking it to her that Chloe had died of her injuries. This seems the obvious way to write off Francis with a grieving Mika unable to remain at the hospital.

In a twist, another exit took an unexpected turn for a character who seemed set to stay longer. The latest episode saw Levi given the chance to become a permanent resident at the hospital, but instead he opted for a significant opportunity in San Antonio. There was a moment of connection between him and Jo over this decision, with Jo urging Levi to pursue his dreams.

Levi had doubts about whether James would take kindly to what he was planning. Despite his deep affection for James, Levi felt compelled to chase his dreams and feared that James might not be open to relocating. However, Levi found solace in Jo inviting him to be the godfather of her kids.

In the gaming world, I’ve compiled an impressive video montage showcasing Levi’s journey – from a clumsy intern to a skilled doctor in the series. As I pedaled my bike out of the hospital for the final time, there was James, who revealed he had just walked away from his own job to stand by my side.

So that appears to be the end of Levi, but his actor is hopeful of a return!

Could Levi return to Grey’s Anatomy?

Jake Borelli recently conducted an extensive interview with Deadline where he discussed the latest episode, expressing concerns about having to fit numerous plot points into only a few episodes instead of a more fitting farewell for Levi. This compression resulted in omitting a heartfelt conversation between Levi and his mom before his departure to Texas.

Even though it was so, Borelli was content with the manner the departure was managed, offering Levi an opportunity to fulfill his aspirations in another place.

We finally see him in a relationship where their communication is good, where they truly do want to be with each other, even though they’re facing obstacles in terms of job and in terms of religion and in lots of different ways. So I think it’s perfectly paired to have him going after his dream career job while also going after his dream guy. I think it is really poetic, especially from where we started with Krista.

It appears that Borelli holds no grudges against the writers of Grey’s Anatomy regarding the way they handled Levi’s exit, as he expressed warm sentiments towards the character’s development throughout the show. He was particularly pleased with how the series tackled Levi’s queer identity and didn’t shy away from dealing with his issues.

As a passionate gamer chiming in, the conversation inevitably steered towards the fate of Levi’s character on the show, and Borelli sparked excitement among us fans when he shared that he was quite optimistic about Levi making a comeback.

I’m very hopeful that Levi will come back. I think the audience is interested to see what Levi is up to, I certainly am. He has so many connections to people still at the hospital, like you said, Jo, so I couldn’t imagine the birth of those babies without Levi bending the world to get there. We’ll see what [showrunner Meg Marinis]] does. I think we also have this wonderful opportunity to have him grow off camera, and then to have him come back at some point and really be this boss that we know he can be. We’ll see what’s in store for the future of the show.

In the tradition of bringing back former characters, it’s quite plausible that we might see Levi reappear in a future season, possibly if some doctors are moving to Texas or if he returns to Seattle for a medical case. It would be exciting to witness a more mature and self-assured Levi, who could potentially be married to James by then.

Despite Grey’s fans being saddened by Levi Schmitt’s departure, Borelli’s assurance gives them optimism that we might see Schmitt again in the series at some point.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
