As a long-standing fan of Doctor Who since its 2005 reboot, I must say that this year’s Christmas Special clip has me more excited than a Whovian at a TARDIS convention! The return of Steven Moffat as the writer is like having the Doctor himself back in the TARDIS. And let’s not forget the surprise encounter with a T-Rex – talk about an unexpected detour in the time vortex!
2023 is when Series 15 of Doctor Who will start, but fans don’t have to wait that long for a sneak peek! This year, BBC generously offered a glimpse into the future with the first official clip from the Doctor Who Christmas Special, giving us a tantalizing taste of what’s to come this holiday season.
What happens in the Doctor Who Christmas Special clip?
In the video, Ncuti Gatwa, who started portraying The Doctor in 2023, showcased the clip. Here, The Doctor, along with Joy (portrayed by Nicola Coughlan), come across a Villengard briefcase, an arms manufacturer with a significant past connection to The Doctor. After deliberating over Villengard’s intentions, The Doctor soon discovers that they’re not the only ones present, leading to a shocking encounter with a T-Rex.
The special, titled “Joy to the World,” is set to premiere on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024.

Since its inception in 2005, Doctor Who has been accustomed to holiday specials, with an annual Christmas episode being produced until 2017. However, from 2019 to 2022, the series aired on New Year’s Day instead, before returning to its traditional Christmas slot last year.
This year’s special features Karen Gillan’s character Joy joining forces with the Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, as a temporary companion. Notably, this episode will be penned by Steven Moffat, a well-known Doctor Who writer, marking his second return to the show since his exit in 2017.

Details about the upcoming Christmas Special are scarce, but Moffat hinted at his original concept for the episode during a recent BBC interview. In essence, he suggested envisioning a scenario set far into the future where a hotel chain discovers time travel. The first thing such a company would do, according to this notion, would be to capitalize on it by recognizing they could sell all the unsold nights in their hotels across history.
