Jumanji 3 Update: Director Talks Development, Possible Cameos From Original

As a gamer with a deep-rooted affection for the Jumanji franchise that spans over two decades, I eagerly await the next installment in this exhilarating journey. Director Jake Kasdan’s recent revelations about Jumanji 3 have stirred my anticipation to unprecedented heights.

Director Jake Kasdan temporarily stepped away from the Jumanji series to focus on Red One, which is slated for release in 2024. However, he’s now shared some intriguing details about a potential third installment in the revamped Jumanji series that started in 2017.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kasdan (the director of both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level) shared that while he’s been focusing on Red One for some time now, work on the next Jumanji movie continued uninterrupted.

Kasdan shared, “We’ve taken breaks here and there over the years, but we’ve always come back to this project. Of course, I was busy making Red One, which was a major undertaking, and then I worked on the two recent Jumanji movies back-to-back, which were amazing experiences. It was beneficial for us to take a short break afterwards, allowing us to think about what we wanted next and clear our minds a bit. Coming back to it now has been refreshing, and I’ve enjoyed revisiting the project again.

What did the Jumanji 3 director say about future film cameos?

Kasdan hinted at the possibility of cameos in the upcoming film and mentioned that Bonnie Hunt, who played Sara Whittle in the 1995 Jumanji, appeared as Mrs. Claus in Red One. In jest, he suggested a possible attempt to include her in the movie, expressing his admiration for her by calling her “the best” actress.

Kasdan shared that he had numerous conversations about our shared Jumanji heritage with her, and she’s simply fantastic. She’s someone I’ve long admired and wanted to collaborate with, and this project provided the perfect chance. This minor yet cherished aspect of the film holds a special place for me, and when she joined us, she was everything you could hope for.

Actress Kirsten Dunst, who has previously starred in Jumanji, has shared that she hasn’t been offered a chance for a brief appearance in the film. Director Joe Johnston complimented Dunst but mentioned that because the original Jumanji ends with most characters forgetting the movie events, it can be challenging to incorporate them into future projects due to plot constraints.

Kasdan shared that Kirsten is great and they’ve always admired her. Since their collaboration on Welcome to the Jungle, they aimed to preserve a link with the original film. They wanted to respect it and maintain its essence. Additionally, the way the initial movie concludes presents challenges in carrying on the story with those characters due to complex plotlines. If you recall, the world returns to its previous state as if nothing happened, leaving most characters unaware of what transpired.

Although it’s complex, our aim has been to find an enjoyable method while maintaining a sense of authenticity to the original tale. For instance, in “Welcome to the Jungle,” we include nods to Robin’s character, and in “The Next Level,” a character (Judy’s aunt Nora, portrayed by Bebe Neuwirth) reappears, adhering to the previous narrative but with a twist.
