As a fan who grew up with the magical world of Berk and its flying beasts, I can hardly contain my excitement as the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is finally here! After years of waiting and rewatching the original trilogy countless times, seeing young Mason Thames embody Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III in the first official photo has sent me soaring with anticipation.
The first look at the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie has been revealed.
The movie “How to Train Your Dragon,” produced by DreamWorks Animation, debuted in 2010. This film is an adaptation from the book series penned by Cressida Cowell. Since then, it has been succeeded by two sequels: “How to Train Your Dragon 2” (released in 2014) and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” (released in 2019). Additionally, there have been several short films, a TV series, and other related productions.
Back in February 2023, it became known that Universal Pictures was working on a live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon. However, the project encountered hold-ups due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Eventually, filming started in January 2024 and they’ve scheduled the release for June 2025.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve just gotten a sneak peek at the first official photograph from the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon! This time around, Mason Thames (from Incoming and The Black Phone) steps into the shoes of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III – a role previously brought to life by Jay Baruchel in the animated film. I can hardly wait to see more!

What else do we know about the live-action How to Train Your Dragon?
In addition to the Thames, the film features Nico Parker in the role of Astrid Hofferson, Gerard Butler portraying Stoick the Vast, Nick Frost playing Gobber the Belch, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs Ingerman, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson, Bronwyn James as Ruffnut Thorston, Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut Thorston, and Ruth Codd as Phlegma.
In the director’s chair for this movie is Dean DeBlois, who previously collaborated with Chris Sanders in directing How to Train Your Dragon in 2010. Later on, he took full control of directing the sequels, the second and third movies, on his own.
In terms of tension, the new movie is incredibly high due to the authentic, lifelike dragon that’s constantly threatening the protagonist, according to DeBlois. Additionally, he noted a sense of discomfort yet vulnerability in Thames during his auditions because he was only 15 years old at the time.
In U.S. theaters starting June 13, 2025, you’ll be able to watch the real-life adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon, brought to you by Universal Pictures.
