As a long-time admirer of Tamil cinema and a devoted follower of Superstar Rajinikanth, I find myself filled with a sense of nostalgic excitement at the news of Thalapathi’s re-release. Having grown up watching this masterpiece, I can vividly remember the awe and inspiration it instilled in me as a young boy. The friendship between Surya and Deva, mirroring the bond between Karna and Duryodhana from the Mahabharata, left an indelible mark on my heart.
In 1991, superstar Rajinikanth and director Mani Ratnam collaborated on the gangster action movie, Thalapathi. This timeless film will be returning to cinemas to celebrate the actor’s 74th birthday.
According to a post by cinephile Laxmi Kanth, the highly anticipated movie is set to be released in cinemas on December 12, 2024, providing an ideal chance for enthusiasts and cinema aficionados alike to catch the film.
In simpler terms, the film “Thalapathi” draws inspiration from the ancient Indian epic “Mahabharata,” specifically focusing on the friendship between Karna and Duryodhana. The movie tells the story of Surya, a kind-hearted orphan who grew up in the slums and is well-known for his generous nature.
Following a tussle with a thug, he earns recognition from a formidable figure known as Deva, eventually leading them to form a friendship. Under the combined leadership of Surya and Deva, events take an unexpected turn when a virtuous district administrator enters the scene, incidentally being a relative of Surya as well.
The remainder of the movie centers around Surya’s quest to discover his real background and the development of his bond with Deva, all while dealing with various circumstances. In addition to the main star, the film also featured Mammootty and Arvind Swamy in prominent roles; notably, Arvind Swamy made his cinematic debut through this production.
Not only did I find myself utterly captivated by the storyline, but the film was an absolute dream come true for me as a fan, boasting an incredible ensemble of actors such as Jaishankar, Amrish Puri, Srividya, Bhanupriya, Shobana, Geetha, and many more in pivotal roles. What’s even more intriguing is that this movie represented the last joint venture between Ratnam and Ilaiyaraaja – two names that have always sent shivers down my spine with their cinematic brilliance.
On the professional side, Rajinikanth recently starred as the main character in the film Vettaiyan, which was helmed by director TJ Gnanavel. This action-packed drama revolves around a police officer who specializes in encounters, but unfortunately shoots an innocent person during investigations into the murder of a close friend.
As the story unfolds, the movie centers around a police officer’s transformation and his efforts to rectify his error. In the meantime, it has been announced that Rajinikanth will appear in the upcoming film “Coolie,” helmed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. This action-packed suspense movie is speculated to hit theaters in May 2025, with Nagarjuna Akkineni and Upendra Rao joining Rajinikanth in significant roles.
Conversely, director Mani Ratnam plans to debut his film titled “Thug Life” featuring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR, scheduled for a June 5, 2025 release.
