A community-driven initiative
As a longtime Lord of the Rings Online player, I can attest to the charm and nostalgia that the early zones hold for those who have journeyed through Middle-Earth since its inception in 2007. However, it’s no secret that the visuals could use a bit of an update to attract newcomers.
For seasoned gamers, the initial areas in Lord of the Rings Online might bring a sense of fond nostalgia. However, its older graphics might be off-putting to new players.
To resolve this issue, the developers aim to significantly revamp the initial game areas. They’re giving players the freedom to decide their own starting points.
A live survey is currently active in the LotRO forums, giving fans the opportunity to cast their votes for their preferred locations chosen from ten sites spread across the initial three regions: Ered Luin, The Shire, and Breeland.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m currently eyeing three potential candidates: Silver Deep, Skorgrim’s Tomb, and the Spooky Quarry. However, it’s all in the hands of our gaming community now. The polls close at the end of November, so let’s make sure our voices are heard and help shape the upcoming update roadmap!

The timeless world of LotRO
Nestled within the imaginative landscape of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, “Lord of the Rings Online” is a cherished massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that made its debut in 2007.
In this game, you’ll get to design your unique characters from classic species such as Humans, Elves, Dwarves, or Halflings. You’ll also encounter well-known figures like Frodo and Aragorn on your epic journeys.
In the expansive virtual realm of “Lord of the Rings Online,” you’ll find intricately designed areas such as the idyllic Shire, the vast plains of Rohan, and the ominous land of Mordor. These regions are teeming with exciting quests, hidden dungeons, and pulse-pounding raids.
While LotRO is free to play, it offers premium options for access to additional content.
As the game universe expands with additions like “Mines of Moria” and “Morgoth’s Legacy”, it provides fresh experiences and deepens the captivating Middle-earth journey, offering more adventures to explore.
The game, with its mix of vast open-world adventure, captivating narrative, and traditional MMORPG elements, continues to be cherished by both devotees of J.R.R. Tolkien’s literature and enthusiasts of the MMORPG genre.
What’s next?
Details about the upcoming changes are being kept secret, but phrases such as “visual upgrade,” “cosmetic overhaul,” and “quality-of-life adjustments” seem to hint at possible graphical modifications and potential gameplay refinements.
In this ongoing survey, we’ll find out where improvements should start first. However, it’s important to note that bigger or intricate regions like the ‘Great Barrow’ might not receive attention right away.
The creators of LotRO subtly suggested that this is merely a starting point, as they aim to progressively update older areas to align with current standards over time.
In the meantime, the community’s votes will shape the next step in this exciting journey.
