As a seasoned Overwatch player with countless hours under my belt, I must say that Aaron Keller’s vision for Overwatch 2 resonates deeply with me. I’ve always felt that while the game is tactically engaging, it lacks the strategic depth I crave. The prospect of seeing more choice and strategy unfold over the course of a match is tantalizing.
According to Aaron Keller, the head of Overwatch 2, he aims to significantly alter the game’s core structure to incorporate greater strategic complexity. To achieve this goal, they are currently conducting a set of experiments to figure out the most effective methods for implementing these changes.
The future of Overwatch
According to Keller, their main goal is for the game to become a “serious competitive” title:
We put a lot of time into talking and thinking about the game that way. That doesn’t mean there can’t be more strategic depth in an Overwatch match. A lot of Overwatch is a tactical game where it’s just what’s happening in that moment-to-moment gameplay and the way your team is operating.
Explaining his desire to implement more strategic depth, he said:
You might have some bigger decisions like what hero you want to swap to, but there’s not a ton of choice that happens over a course of that match besides the team fighting. We’d love to be able to introduce more of that. We’d want people to think there is more of a story to a match and have different things to look forward to over the course of a match.
As a passionate Overwatch gamer, I understand that merely introducing fresh maps and characters doesn’t align with our long-term objectives. While these updates may spark interest and potentially create a new favorite hero for players, they won’t fundamentally transform the core essence of Overwatch.
According to him, the group responsible for Overwatch has been overly cautious with their system and change implementations. However, players can anticipate more significant alterations and improvements in the time ahead.
Up until now, there’s no specified timeline for when the changes to Overwatch will occur, and players haven’t had a chance yet to test the transition back to the 6v6 game format. Consequently, it remains uncertain what modifications Overwatch might undergo in the future.
I’m curious about your thoughts on Keller’s proposals. How might we enhance Overwatch’s tactical layers further?
