Red One: Dwayne Johnson Says Oppenheimer Inspired Him to Push for IMAX

As a seasoned gamer who has seen countless movies and their behind-the-scenes stories, I must say Dwayne Johnson‘s move to release Red One in IMAX after being inspired by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer is nothing short of strategic genius! It’s like he’s not just an action hero on the screen, but a cunning strategist off it too.

It turns out that Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming film, titled “Red One,” is set to hit IMAX screens due to being inspired by Christopher Nolan’s movie, “Oppenheimer.” The film directed by Jake Kasdan boasts an impressive cast with Chris Evans and JK Simmons joining Johnson. Despite the high-profile ensemble, “Red One” has failed to impress critics and currently holds a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

Dwayne Johnson saw Oppenheimer and thought Red One in IMAX could be ‘game over’

Red One is set to open in theatres in the United States on November 15, 2024.

Continuing his movie’s promotion, Dwayne Johnson recently had an interview at IMAX where he discussed the decision to release Red One in IMAX format. The actor stated, “Our aim for ‘Red One’ was to create a film that offers the best viewing experience on the largest screen available. In our opinion, the largest screens available are those offered by Imax.

Johnson shared that he had the chance to watch the 2023 movie Oppenheimer in an IMAX theater, which is also where filmmaker Christopher Nolan typically watches and screens his films. He mentioned, “During the production of ‘Red One’, I was given the opportunity to see Oppenheimer. I watched it in the very same Imax theater where Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma watch their movies. I even asked if I could sit in Chris’ usual spot. They replied, ‘This is where Chris sits.’

The actor shared additional details about his conversation with director Jake Kasdan regarding Red One. He stated, “After watching Oppenheimer, I was struck by its brilliance but thought, ‘Wow, if Red One were on this screen and with this technology, it could be the end game.’ I then sent him a picture of my bare chest and a screenshot of the screen to demonstrate how fantastic IMAX would be.

Despite Red One receiving an IMAX premiere, it’s unlikely to achieve the impressive opening weekend revenue of Oppenheimer. According to previous reports, Red One is projected to make between $30 and $35 million during its initial weekend at the box office, whereas Oppenheimer grossed $82.4 million in its debut as per Box Office Mojo.
