GOG.com launches GOG Preservation Program to keep classic games running

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but applaud GOG.com for their new initiative, the GOG Preservation Program. It’s like they’ve read my gaming diary entries from the 90s and decided to make my childhood dreams come true!

From its start, GOG.com has specialized in offering classic PC video games. Its focus has been on providing both new and old games to PC users without the hassle of Digital Rights Management (DRM). Now, it’s stepping forward with a new phase in its mission, as it recognizes that many classic games have been overlooked due to advancements in PC hardware technology. Since publishers or original developers may not be available to ensure these titles work on modern systems, GOG.com is preparing to take on this task itself through the introduction of the GOG Preservation Program.

As a passionate gamer, I always keep an eye on the games available through the GOG Preservation Program website. This program aims to ensure that timeless classics can run smoothly on today’s advanced systems. The GOG.com team does this by diving into the game’s code to enhance user experience with quality-of-life improvements, fixing stability issues, and making sure these games are compatible not just with new hardware, but also with updated operating systems.

Approximately 100 game titles, including game bundles, are currently included in the GOG Preservation Program. These range from recent releases like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Mad Max, to classics dating back to 1985’s Ultimate 4: Quest of the Avatar. The GOG.com platform plans to continually expand this collection and ensure that all games under the GOG Preservation Program continue to function on advancements in future PC technology.

The unveiling of the GOG Preservation Program falls on the same day as GOG.com’s 16th anniversary, which marked its debut as Good Old Games. Several titles from the GOG Preservation Program are showcased during the site’s massive 16th Anniversary Sale, so make sure to check out GOG.com for a comprehensive list of these highlighted games.
