As a die-hard fan of Heartbreak High since its original run back in the 90s, I can hardly contain my excitement as the third and final season has finally started filming! After what felt like an eternity, Netflix renewed our beloved Australian teen series for another round of drama and angst, and now that cameras have begun rolling in November 2024, it’s almost time to return to Hartley High one last time.
Have you heard some exciting news, Heartbreak High enthusiasts? The third and concluding season has commenced shooting! Following Netflix’s decision to renew the Australian teen series for a third season in May, filming started on the eagerly awaited final act in November 2024. It won’t be long before we revisit Hartley High for one last dose of teen drama.
The modern reboot of the 90’s Australian teen drama “Heartbreak High” premiered on Netflix in September 2022. Interestingly, the second season was released in April 2022 before the renewal for a third and final season was announced. Filming for the last season is expected to start at the end of 2024, with an anticipated release date in 2025.
With excitement building about what season 3 might bring after the nail-biting season 2 finale, members of the cast and the show’s executive producer recently spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the making of the final season. Based on their insights, it seems we can look forward to a highly satisfying conclusion, given that the executive producer hinted at a “satisfying ending.

Heartbreak High season 3 begins filming
As the final season approaches for any series, viewers often have high expectations and hopes for each episode. The executive producer of “Heartbreak High”, Carly Heaton, alleviates fans’ concerns by promising, “Rest assured, we will be providing a satisfying conclusion to all the heartwarming relationships within the show.” This brings a sense of comfort!
Although we may not be puzzled by the romantic pairings when the closing credits play during the bittersweet series finale, there could still be lingering questions due to life’s inherent complexity. In discussing the upcoming season, Heaton hinted that Season 3 will delve into themes of maturity, building upon the exploration of consent and toxic masculinity in Seasons 1 and 2.
Here’s what the executive producer shared with The Hollywood Reporter about season 3:
It is really that coming-of-age story. We are really crossing that threshold with all of our beautiful cast from childhood to adulthood. The unique thing, I think, in Australia, is that idea that at 17 you have to pick a course at university — if you’re going to university — that is very specific and narrow. You don’t have that buffer, like you do in the U.K. or the States, of doing a generalist degree first. There’s a lot of fear and tension around those end-of-year exams everywhere around this country. And [the show portrays] how they deal with it — and [also asks], ‘do you need to have it all sorted out at that age?’
Previously, Netflix had hinted that the last season would explore the group’s transition towards adulthood, but there seems to be an extra layer of mystery in the forthcoming farewell season. As per Netflix’s description for Season 3, “a harmless prank of revenge backfires, forcing Amerie and her friends to keep their misdeed hidden.
As a gamer immersed in this storyline, Amerie and her crew are carrying a heavy burden, one that could either stay hidden or burst out unexpectedly. Amidst juggling our personal lives and dealing with internal turmoil, we’ve got this secret looming over us. One thing I know for certain: This season is going to keep fans on the edge of their seats!
