As a long-time Costco shopper and a parent of two children with lactose intolerance, I find this recall of Costco butter quite concerning. The fact that a product labeled as “dairy” might not have been clearly indicating its main ingredient, milk, on the packaging is not only misleading but potentially dangerous for people like me who rely on accurate labeling to protect our family’s health.
On October 11, Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest, LLC decided to pull back approximately 80,000 pounds of Costco butter from the market. This action was taken because there was a missing disclaimer about milk being an ingredient in the Costco Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter and Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter products. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then officially recalled 79,200 pounds of butter on November 7, categorizing it as a Class II recall.
Costco butter recall: What happened?
46,800 pounds (1,300 cases) and 32,400 pounds (900 cases) respectively of Costco’s Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter and Salted Sweet Cream Butter have been recalled by the FDA. Each recalled pack contains four sticks. The recall was instigated because the packaging lacked a disclaimer stating that the butter “contains milk,” despite listing cream as an ingredient on the label.
The FDA began recall proceedings for a product on October 11, and later, on November 7, they classified it as having the second highest risk level. This Class II recall indicates that the recalled item may cause temporary or reversible health issues. It’s worth noting that this recall was voluntary by Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest, LLC, and no official press release was made about it.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this:
Under the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2024 (FALCPA), milk is among the nine primary food allergens that must be clearly indicated on food labels. This means that any food containing these major allergens should specify from where they originated in the labeling information.
