Idle Hands: Finn Wolfhard & Jason Reitman Reteam on Horror Comedy Remake

As a die-hard fan who has followed Finn Wolfhard‘s incredible journey since his days as Mike Wheeler in Stranger Things, I am beyond thrilled to see him teaming up with Jason Reitman yet again! The duo’s collaboration on Ghostbusters: Afterlife was nothing short of spectacular, and I have no doubt that their remake of Idle Hands will be a cult classic in the making.

Finn Wolfhard and Jason Reitman, who have previously worked together on the comedic biopic Saturday Night and the latest Ghostbusters films, are joining forces once more. This time they’re planning a fresh take on the 1999 movie Idle Hands for Sony Pictures.

What is Idle Hands about?

1999 saw the release of “Idle Hands,” a movie penned by Rodman Flender, with Terri Hughes and Ron Milbau contributing to the screenplay. The story revolves around Anton (played by Devon Sawa), a typical teenager who enjoys his share of laziness and marijuana. However, his laid-back lifestyle takes an unexpected turn when his hand is possessed, causing it to instigate a series of violent acts. The movie features an impressive cast that includes Seth Green, Elden Henson, Jessica Alba, and Vivica A. Fox.

Initially, the film was met with mediocre reviews by critics and underperformed at the box office. In its opening week, it earned only $1.8 million and eventually grossed around $4 million, despite an estimated production budget of up to $25 million. Its release coincided with the Columbine High School massacre, which affected its distribution plans as well.

The duo Wolfhard and Billy Bryk, known for penning and directing the horror-comedy “Hell of a Summer,” are set to write the remake of “Idle Hands.” They’re also being considered for directorial duties on the project, thanks to the positive response to “Hell of a Summer” at the Toronto Film Festival. Neon has acquired the film and intends to distribute it during the summer season of 2025.

In a new twist, Idle Hands’ remake brings back the collaboration between Reitman and Bryk. Notably, Reitman joins as one of the producers alongside Jennifer Todd and Suzanne Todd under their Team Todd label. Additionally, Gil Keenan takes on the producer role, while Maia Eyre supervises the project at Sony Pictures.

Apart from reappearing as Mike Wheeler in the last season of Stranger Things, Wolfhard is set to appear in an upcoming movie titled “The Legend of Ochi” as well.
