As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Petit Island from Xelo Games is a delightful addition to my collection. Coming from a long lineage of cat enthusiasts, this game felt like it was tailor-made for me!
Petit Island is a charming indie game developed by Xelo Games which transports you to a picturesque volcanic tropical island. As you journey, you’ll encounter and capture memorable moments with the endearing locals and landscapes, all while following in your Grandpaw’s footsteps. This is a tranquil, narrative-focused experience interspersed with a hint of collectibles. While capturing fish, insects, and making new friends among the adorable characters is delightful, some concepts could have been fleshed out further, preventing it from fully realizing its full potential.
Time to get curious, kitty
Little Island is inviting you, sweet kitten named Lily, for an exciting escapade! As a curious kitten who’s listened to countless stories of Little Island from her elderly Grandpaw, you now have the chance to help him relive his past adventures. With your camera in hand, it’s time to embark on this journey and capture every moment for Grandpaw’s memories.
Customizing Lily’s appearance allows you to style her according to your preference. I particularly enjoyed the adorable selection of pink ensembles and the choice to change Lily from the standard calico to a ginger tabby. Notably, Lily’s forgetfulness in leaving her smartphone and credit card at the airport doesn’t do much to contradict the common internet speculations that all ginger cats, often referred to as orange, share only a single brain cell.
Stepping out of the airport, I was eager to delve into the sights straight away. Indeed, I embarked on a leisurely walk to soak up the surroundings, which included an unusual beach with sandy mounds and a play area. However, not long after, I got side-tracked by a brief errand to garner some local currency – dollars or duit’s as they’re known here – to buy a tram ticket for my journey from the airport to the main island.
Picture purrfect
Initially on the island, the task at hand was capturing images of some local artists, in search of the one Grandpaw often spoke about. Each section serves as an introduction to a fresh gameplay feature or tool, such as a fishing rod or insect net, which Lily can utilize throughout her island exploration. This way, Petit Island consistently presents new skills and activities for you to discover.
Soon enough, I found myself short on funds, but fortunately, I’d managed to unveil a fishing rod and bug net. Equipped with these useful tools, I began accumulating insects and fish, and even sold a portion of them to acquire additional goods.
On the small island, there was much back-and-forth conversation, and at times I yearned for some swift travel options. Fortunately, you’ll have the opportunity to acquire collectible mounts that will allow you to traverse the island a bit more quickly. The bananallama proved to be a valuable addition to my gear, as my tiny legs often grow weary!
Although Lily appears small with kitten-like legs, she occasionally performs simple platforming tasks which add a fun element without becoming too challenging. Her movements are adorable and easy to manage. To ensure her safety during flight, Lily carries a tiny yellow umbrella. The animations exude an abundance of cuteness, with my personal favorite being Lily’s skipping motion as she moves around town.
Don’t OD on the catnip tea
In my adventures around Petit Island, I’ve been encountering an enchanting assortment of characters. The MusCATeers, those three kittens dressed up in trench coats, are absolutely charming. I can’t help but think they could have added a bit more feline flair with a name like MeowsCATeers.
In this game, there are aspects that seem underdeveloped, offering potential for more immersion but falling short. It’s a pity I couldn’t build a posse similar to my Grandpaw’s, as the relationships Lily develops don’t feel deeply bonded or unbreakable.
Petit Island’s design is thoughtfully put together, even though certain aspects weren’t fully utilized. I didn’t encounter any significant glitches (ones that could be trapped in a net, figuratively speaking). The user interface is straightforward but it could use more features for enhancing the user experience. I find myself wishing for a faster way to switch between handheld tools, as I often have to open and close my inventory to equip and unequip them every time.
I’ve run out of cat puns
Petit Island is an adorable and cozy experience, and I’m pawsitively sure I’ll find myself booting this game up to work on my collectibles again. There are also a few mysteries around the volcano I’d like to uncover. However, while cozy games and cute kittens go paw-in-paw, there isn’t quite enough here to make it a fancy feast. Nevertheless, this was a fun little tail. Whisker me away to Petit Island, cause I’m feline like a getaway. Okay, that’s all the puns I’ve got.
